Dana White Says Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao Couldn't Compete in MMA
Dana White is obviously biased, but is he right?
Would both Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao be bested if they tested their sweet science out in the octagon?
"I'm a huge Pacquiao fan," White told Sports Illustrated's Dan Patrick. "Pacquiao is a more aggressive fighter and his fights are more fun to watch, but either one of those guys would get beaten in mixed martial arts."
Manny Pacquiao would most likely compete in the WEC’s bantamweight division, where Dominick Cruz currently holds the belt. If Pacquiao took a tune up fight it would place him into fights against Brian Bowles, Miguel Torres, or perhaps a fight at 145 pounds against Urijah Faber would be more appealing.
As for Mayweather, he could fight at either 145 or 155.
He would be more suited to fight at featherweight but when he fought De La Hoya, the Golden Boy’s belt was on the line, which required Mayweather to move up in weight from 147 pounds to 154.
Fights with Jose Aldo, Urijah Faber and Mike Brown would all be intriguing but nothing would compare to Mayweather lacing up four ounce gloves and taking on lightweight great B.J. Penn.
Penn is known for his vaunting boxing skills, but that is within the context of MMA. How long would it take before Penn started shooting in for takedowns in an effort to choke out the biggest money maker in combat sports?
“And as for Manny Pacquiao versus Dominic Cruz," questioned Bloody Elbow's Kid Nate. "Please, Cruz was a D-I wrestler and would put Manny flat on his back in no time. From there it wouldn't be pretty.”
While it is fun to speculate on these hybrid fights, isn't it also pointless?
Perhaps that is part of the charm. Fight fans seem masochistic in their pipe dreaming for fights that will never happen in their own sports.
Fight fans would love to witness Fabricio Fedor versus Brock Lesnar or Floyd Mayweather battle Paul Williams. But I digress.
Roy Jones Jr. versus Anderson Silva anyone?
