We Like You Better This Way, Diego

Esteban SabbatassoMay 23, 2010

Over the past few months since Diego's designation as coach of the national team, I've been rather critical of many of his choices, and cynical as to his capabilities as coach of "la selección". But I believe in being equally sincere in compliment and criticism, so I'll have to admit that Diego has certainly shown considerable signs of improvement since that agonizing last-minute qualification against Uruguay.

Tactical improvements

Nearly all of Diego's initial mistakes can be attributed to his initial arrogance. He himself has admitted to having learned a great deal from his recent errors. As you can imagine, after being drummed on by Bolivia and Brazil, Argentina's only hopes for a decent World Cup campaign were dependent on Diego learning a lot  as coach... and fast .

The qualifying matches against Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay tactically denuded Diego, showing how a naive, blind attacking strategy makes for an over-exposed and fragile defense. However, the nightmarish results in those matches seem to have profoundly impacted Diego tactically. He seems absolutely convinced now, that 4-4-2 (with no full backs) is definitely  his cup of tea. He's shooting for a reliable defence.

And quite frankly, 4-4-2 is really not a bad idea. I mean, I admire Marcelo Bielsa and others who have found ways to make it work with three in the back. But frankly, if you're going tinker you'd best know what you're doing. Otherwise 4-4-2 is generally the better idea.

A change of attitude

The prospects of not reaching the world cup (in a country like Argentina), is -no doubt- pressure enough to make anyone lose it. But recently we've begun to see a less hostile, more relaxed, realistic yet positive Diego. Gone (for now) are the days of bickering with journalists and making a fool of himself on TV.

Most importantly, Diego seems quite focused on the job at hand. And, contrary to many opinions I've heard, I'm beginning to believe he may have chosen those particular 23 for a good reason. He's trying to put together a group with good chemistry, a group he can communicate with. Now, you or I may disagree, but we'll have to admit that a strong group is important.

No doubt, the next 20 days will be all about light on-the-ball training. These players will need a lot of rest and recuperation after those gruelling club competitions. Oh, and... no injury's please, dear God!
