John Cena Ain't Got *Bleep* On Sting: Here's Why
If you've been around the internet wrestling forums anytime in the past five years, you've probably come across two words.
No, not, "Suck It." Try, "Cena Sucks!"
If I run down the list of complaints that people have had or the details of his character (or lack thereof) that people have noticed about John Cena, it looks something like the following:
— Cena gets shoved down our throats each week.
— Cena can't wrestle to save his life or the life of any WWE employee
— Cena is really not that entertaining to watch
— Cena used to be cool when he freestyled his promos, now they're just terrible.
— Cena was better as a heel.
— Cena:Today's WWE::Hogan:1980's WWF (Cena is to today's WWE product as Hulk Hogan is to the 1980's WWF product. Translation: Cena is today's answer to Superman)
Cena this, Cena that. Cena, Cena, Cena!
Well, actually the list could go on forever on why people don't like Cena. I do agree with some of the above, but I don't diss Cena every chance I get.
It's not like constantly dissing Cena will get the man fired or anything.
Besides, y'all know Steve "Sting" Borden is still an active wrestler, right?
You see, I'm a Sting fan. I can't say, "always was," because I haven't lived through his "beach blonde" days of WCW. I only remember the era of the face paint a la, "The Crow."
Back before I knew the painful truth about wrestling, I'd always watch WCW to see Sting beat up some nasty heel, and I was always fueled with adrenaline to see Sting take a beating, only to inflict a bigger beating on his attacker, whether it was Vampiro, Lex Luger, Hogan, The Giant, or anyone else that I loved to hate in WCW.
That feeling stuck when he first came to TNA, and again, I didn't know back then what I know now.
Fast forward (man, I love that phrase!) to the in-ring return of Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan — I believe it was Flair and AJ Styles Vs. Hogan and Abyss, and I also believe that was the night RVD debuted.
That's when the feeling started to go away and not because Sting was a bad guy.
When I tuned into Impact that night, I didn't know that Sting had done another heel turn and was scheduled to wrestle.
I also didn't know he was going to get beat by RVD, only to beat the daylights out of him for about five to 10 minutes.
All of that was what ended up happening.
RVD debuted, beat Sting in what seemed like less than two minutes, and got a pop that rivals the reactions Jeff Hardy has gotten recently.
Then, just as RVD begins to celebrate, Sting jabs Van Dam with the bat and beats him down with it.
No Jay Lethal, no Abyss, Hell, not even Hogan was able to run in and save RVD's beaten body from Sting.
Sting beat up RVD and then left.
And yet Cena is the superman?
Yeah, Cena almost always wins matches, and yeah he's always doing something on Raw, but Cena didn't spend 10 minutes of a pay per view beating his opponent senseless.
Sting Vs. Jeff Jarrett at Sacrifice was in no way, shape, or form the match I thought it was going to be.
It was done to where there really was no match taking place. What took place was nothing more than a, "TNA-approved," glorified beatdown.
The only two matches I remember Sting losing, were his match with AJ Styles last year at Bound For Glory, and his match with RVD.
I'm sure I'm leaving out a few matches, but for the most part, Sting hasn't lost that many matches in recent memory.
Plus, when Sting's in the ring, it used to be fun to watch him stop the heels in their tracks with a baseball bat, and then to see him have Hogan-like power when one heel attacked him.
Now, everytime Sting attacks someone with the bat, I get reminded of Sheamus when he first became WWE champ.
Remember how, even though Cena would try to dominate Sheamus in typical Cena fashion, Sheamus would always end up being the one that beat up Cena?
Back in 1994 when Kevin Nash was Diesel, and he tried every chance he got to attack Bret Hart before their title match at the King Of The Ring, it made sense for a heel to be that dominant because Diesel was a monster at the time.
Sheamus was fighting off Jamie Noble and a few other lesser-known people before he got Cena.
Sting attacks people with his bat as if they were all jobbers,
Like I've said, in some ways, I see how Cena can be disliked despite being face, but the next time you say, "Cena Sucks," remember one thing:
Cena got put in a Rings Of Saturn/Crossface type submission by Batista, just days before Over The Limit.
Sting beat Jeff Jarrett down in what was a backstage assault that was promoted as a "match".
I really don't care what happens at Over The Limit between Batista and Cena.
All I ask is that you watch Sting from now until Bound For Glory.
Yes, he does cut promos, so watch them too, but watch what Sting does. Keep your TV sets on Spike TV every Thursday until Bound For Glory 2010, watch Sting beat up on people and then tell me that John Cena is still wrestling's "Superman."
