Jake Delhomme Won't Be Going It Alone in Cleveland Browns Offense

Brian DiTullioMay 5, 2010

The Cleveland Browns offense was just plain offensive last year, finishing dead last in the league.

There now has almost been a complete turnover on the offensive unit, and therefore it becomes harder to predict what you're going to see on the field in 2010.

The only quarterback still on the roster from 2009 is third-stringer Brett Ratliff, and he now has competition from third-round draft pick Colt McCoy and free agent Graham Harrell.

Wide receivers Mohamed Massaquoi, Brian Robiskie, and Chansi Stuckey are there from last year, along with Syndric Steptoe, Jake Allen, and sixth-round draft pick Carlton Mitchell, among a few others.

The running backs are second-round draft pick Montario Hardesty, Peyton Hillis, and Chris Jennings at the moment as Jerome Harrison and Lawrence Vickers have yet to sign their contracts.

The tight ends have received a significant upgrade with the addition of Ben Watson and Alex Smith. Greg Estandia, Evan Moore, and Robert Royal round out the roster at the moment.

Jake Delhomme will be leading the unit, unless he's injured or is outplayed so badly in preseason as to force a different decision.

Delhomme has a career QB rating of 82.1, which could be understated because of how bad his 2009 season was.

Delhomme, if he plays a full season under team president Mike Holmgren's West Coast offense, should throw for around 3,000 yards and around 25-30 touchdowns.

With the focus and success the Browns had with the running game at the end of last season, the bonus for Delhomme is the burden won't be all on him to score. The Browns should be able to establish a good running game in 2010.

There's this big wild-card at the coaching position, though, in offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. A rookie coordinator last year, he showed some improvement as the season ended, but the numbers speak for themselves.

Holmgren allowed head coach Eric Mangini to keep his staff intact, so Daboll's success or failure at developing into a good coordinator will be linked to Mangini's as a head coach.

It gets nasty in Cleveland in the winter, but Mangini proved last year he can win without passing. Don't expect the Browns offense to be ranked last in 2010.
