Redskins cut 5 players

The Redskins released DT Anthony Montgomery, WR Marko Mitchell, WR James Robinson, RB Anthony Aldridge and RB P.J. Hill.

Montgomery, a 2006 5th round pick of the Redskins, fell out of favor with the last coaching staff and it looks as if things went no better with Mike Shanahan and Defensive Coordinator Jim Haslett. Odds are that they decided Montgomery couldn’t play nose tackle or defensive end in a 3-4 defense or that they already had better players for those positions. I’m not sure how they came to that conclusion so quickly, but it does appear to be done.

Cutting Marko Mitchell is a stunner to me and I don’t understand it at all. For a team with no proven wideouts apart from the 30-year-old Santana Moss, cutting a promising kid [7th round pick last year] with speed [clocked at 4.4 in some trials] and size [6'4"] is baffling. Sure, Mitchell was raw coming out of a small college known for running a gadget offense and he needed work running patterns, but he was clearly the best young wideout on the team last preseason. I suppose we could assume that Shanahan likes the wideouts he already has, but since he keeps signing receivers who are either mediocre [Bobby Wade] or geriatric [Joey Galloway], it’s hard to view this position as an area of strength on the team. I hope and believe Mitchell will catch on somewhere else. He’s got potential.
