Masters 2010 Live Blog: Leaders, Live Results, and Scores

Todd KaufmannApr 7, 2010

7:30pm EDT - With the final group on 18, let's take a look at the some of players towards the top of the leaderboard and what time they'll tee off.

Also, we'll take a look at a few players that could make a move toward the top of the leaderboard and which ones could fade.

Fred Couples, the current leader at six-under par after day one, will tee off at 12:58pm.

Tom Watson, one back of Couples at five-under, will be one of the earlier tee times at 9:07am.

Here are some other tee times to look out for.

Lee Westwood (9:40am), Phil Mickelson (10:35am), Anthony Kim (10:13am), Ian Poulter (1:31pm), Tiger Woods (1:42pm), Ernie Els (10:13am), Angel Cabrera (10:24am), Steve Stricker (1:31pm), Rory McIlroy (12:36pm).

There are a whole lot of golfers that I could name as well as their tee time but these are the guys that could, again, make their move just like they did today.

Players to watch tomorrow that could bolt to the top of the leaderboard could be a short list but here are my few. Nick Watney, Anthony Kim, Tiger Woods, K.J. Choi, Ernie Els and I'm curious to see if Tom Watson and Fred Couples to have the same success they had today.

Thanks for hanging out with me today. We'll have a live blog for the remaining three rounds to come hang out with us and get my thoughts as the days go on.

See everyone tomorrow.

7:25pm EDT - Tiger will finish off with a par and a four-under 68 for his round today. Not bad.

On a random note, for those of you watching the Masters on CBS and are seeing camera shots with water spots on the cameras, don't you think they would have given the camera guys towels to make sure the cameras always have clear shots. They spend millions of dollars on this broadcast but apparently 50 cents for a towel was too much to ask for.

7:20pm EDT - Tiger with a perfect approach shot on 18. If he can finish it off with a birdie, he'll move to within one of the leader (Fred Couples). What a round Tiger has had today. With all the speculation that he wouldn't be himself or he'd be too distracted, he's answered all of the critics and then some.

7:08pm EDT - For all the people that thought Steve Stricker would be someone to watch, he didn't have the kind of opening round he was hoping for. He was bogey free on the back nine but missed a birdie putt on 18 to finish at 73 (+1).

7:05pm EDT - After a disappointing second shot that landed in the greenside bunker, Ian Poulter got up and down for par on 18 in impressive fashion to finish at four-under par, 68.

6:57pm EDT - Something the CBS analysts just brought up, barring a double-bogey on the 18th hole, this will be Tiger's best opening round ever at the Masters. To me, that's pretty impressive.

6:53pm EDT - While the names at the top of the leaderboard are familiar, guys like Fred Couples (-6), Tom Watson (-5), Lee Westwood (-5), Phil Mickelson (-5), Y.E. Yang (-5), and K.J. Choi (-5), take a look at the guys that are right behind them. Anthony Kim, Nick Watney, Tiger Woods, and Ian Poulter. All four of those guys are dangerous golfers when they're on their game.

6:42pm EDT - I can't say enough about how well Matt Kuchar and K.J. Choi have played alongside Tiger Woods. Usually that would be a huge distraction but these two have played extremely well.

Kuchar sits at two-under after barely missing a birdie putt on 16 while Choi makes a beautiful birdie putt, his fourth straight, to move within one of Fred Couples.

6:40pm EDT - As soon as these final groups finish, we'll take a look at the top 10 and look ahead to the first tee times tomorrow and who might be the movers and shakers in Friday's second round.

On another note, I'm surprised that this storm the area was expecting has not moved in yet. We'll have to see how the course plays tomorrow with the amount of rain expected this evening.

6:33pm EDT - Fred Couples narrowly missed another birdie putt but he'll settle for a par and finish off a tremendous round of 66 (-6). He will be the leader when the second round kicks off tomorrow morning.

6:31pm EDT - Ladies and gentlemen, Tiger is back. He finished off his second eagle of the round, the first time he's ever done that at the Masters. If there's any question of whether he's back...he's back.

6:30pm EDT - I was hoping this wouldn't happen but David Duval seems to be coming apart at the seems. He missed a very makeable bogey putt and will have to settle for a double bogey. He'll go from a respectable even par to two-over par.

I just hope he can shake this off and play a better second round tomorrow.

6:26pm EDT - I can't say enough about how well Fred Couples is playing right now. I got a text from a friend of mine, a former sportswriter, saying he believes Freddy is going to fade, I'm not so sure especially after watching his approach shot at 18.

6:10pm EDT - The last three holes, Tiger has had very makeable putts but just hasn't been able to capitalize. He had two birdie chances, missed those, now misses a par putt that puts him back to two-under par.

While Tiger was missing, Couples was making putts. I honestly can't believe that I'm seeing Fred Couples on the top of the leaderboard. He's played as well as anyone today. Six-under par for Fred Couples heading to 18.

5:56pm EDT - I gotta say, Matt Kuchar and K.J. Choi have played pretty well being paired with Tiger Woods. Kuchar is one-under par while Choi sits at two-under par heading to 14.

5:39pm EDT - I feel like we just stepped back in time because Fred Couples landed a birdie that moves him to five-under par and a tie for first with Tom Watson among a few others. What a second round tomorrow will be.

5:37pm EDT - Sergio Garcia just doesn't seem like himself today. Can't really describe what's going on or if it's in his head but he just doesn't have the same kind of hop in his step or in his demeanor.

5:25pm EDT - Tiger just missed a putt that he really should have learned from Matt Kuchar who had just putted on the same line as Tiger. Both guys missed it right. I'm sure Woods is wanting that one back right about now.

5:16pm EDT - Update on the players still on the course. Tiger Woods is two-under after 11 holes, Fred Couples is playing STRONG and is currently four-under after 14 holes, Ian Poulter is one-under after 12, Sergio Garcia is two-over par after 14, and Padraig Harrington is two-over after 12.

5:05pm EDT - I love seeing David Duval hanging tough at one-under par so far. Really hoping that he hangs around all four days. Good guy that's just hit some tough luck over the last few years.

4:57pm EDT - How would you like this final pairing. Tom Watson, champion from yesterday, and Phil Mickleson, a champion from today. I would think that would be a tremendous final two. Thoughts??

4:49pm EDT - I handed out the "I've had a hard day" award and the first annual award goes to Michael Campbell. He finished at 11-over par 83.

4:48pm EDT - Gotta give big props to Nick Watney the way he's playing, especially because he's a Fresno State guy. Gotta love a Bulldog in contention...Hey Pat Hill, maybe you need to talk to Nick about what it takes to at least contend. Just sayin...

4:41pm EDT - If anyone doubted Tiger being able to return in his usual form, that doubt should have come to an end on the ninth hole on an absolutely incredible shot.

4:35pm EDT - I know you guys missed me! Let's get to the news of what's going on in Augusta right now. The National Weather Service already has tornado watches out for surrounding counties and this storm system could start to affect the tournament in the next hour or so. We'll have to see where the field is when the storm arrives.

4:20pm EDT - Tiger lands in the top 10 for the first time with a birdie at #8. He's JUST 8 pars and 2 birdies on 13 and 15 away from having one hell of a return.

3:45pm EDT - Freddy "Boom-Boom" Couples does what he does best, and birdie's the par-5 8th to move to 2-under par.

3:34 pm EDT - Impressive start by Matt Kuchar (-2 through 5 holes). It's never easy to play with Tiger, but I have to imagine that it's an especially difficult task this week.

3:23pm EDT - Y.E. Yang birdies 17 to take the lead. He's 5 under on his back 9. His playing partner, Phil Mickelson, made 5 birides on back 9 when he won his first Green Jacket in 2004.

3:17pm EDT - You run into a genie who tells you that you get to pick the 2010 Masters Winner, but you only have three options: Tom Watson, Fred Couples, and Tiger Woods. Who do you pick?

3:09pm EDT - The following players are currently in the top 15 on the leaderboard:

Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson, David Toms, Ernie Els, Anthony Kim, Matt Kuchar, Bernhard Langer, Mike Weir, Zach Johnson, Fred Couples, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, and David Duval.

Mind you, some of these guys have only played 4 holes, but still, it doesn't hurt anyone to dream about an all-star weekend.

3:04pm EDT - What is this, Pebble Beach? Someone please tell the wind to quite down.

2:59pm EDT - Mickelson and Yang birdie 15 to tie Watson. The leaders have 12 Major wins between them.

(Watson, 8)

(Mickelson, 3)

(Yang, 1)

2:56pm EDT - What a 1st day leaderboard! If Tiger (-1) and Fred Couples (-1) can just make a couple more birdies.

2:46pm EDT - Mickelson and Yang are sitting over eagle putts to go 6 under, respectively. 2 putts and they both tie Watson for the tournament lead.

2:45pm EDT - CBSSports needs to do a better job with their video feeds. It's bad enough that we have to watch blow outs in favor of games that are going down to the wire during March Madness. How is this not getting fixed?

2:41pm EDT - Nice birdie for Tiger on the short par 4, 3rd hole. I have to believe that he needs to get off to a fast start.

2:39pm EDT - Tom Watson is amazing. Let's hope that his putting stroke stays on line.

2:25pm EDT - Y.E. Yang playing great golf today, currently sitting at four-under par one shot back of the leader Tom Watson who's in the clubhouse after a five-under 67 opening round. Did someone give Tom Watson some sort of youth serum? Though I did hear his son got engaged on the golf course a few days ago, so maybe riding the adrenaline from that moment.

At this point, I'm going to turn my coverage over to Dave Finocchio and crew and they'll take you right up to the 4pm EDT hour where I'll be back with you.

Thanks for hanging out.

2:10pm EDT - A quick run down of some of the more familiar names and what they've done so far today.

Paul Casey is three-under after 14, as is Ernie Els, Nick Watney is two-under par after eight holes, Fred Couples is two-under at the fourth, Sergio Garcia also at two-under. Bernard Langer, after leading most of the day, finishes at one-under par 71 for the day.

Mike Weir, Anthony Kim, and Angel Cabrera are all at one-under par. Phil Mickelson landed a huge birdie putt at 13 and is currently at three-under par, just two shots back of the leader.

Padraig Harrington, Stewart Cink and Ian Poulter all at one-under par, all three are in the very early stages of their first rounds.

2:05pm EDT - The man that we've all been waiting for is finally on the course. Tiger Woods has teed off and is even par after the first hole.

Take a look at the leaderboard and for a moment you would have seen both Lee Westwood and Tom Watson tied at four-under par. BUT, the crafty veteran Tom Watson would not hear of it and birdied the 18th hole to move to five-under par to finish his day. Way to go Tom!

1:58pm EDT - Ok, I know you all are wanting an update on the first annual "I'm having a hard day" award, so here it is.

Ian Woosnam is hanging on to the award at nine-over par but he has company from two different guys that are one stroke back.

Anders Hansen is still going STRONG at eight-over par but he's on the 18th and if he doesn't land a bogey on this hole, he won't win the award. What a shame. Then we have Michael Campbell who is looking good so far. He's eight-over par after just 10 holes. I love how these guys are just dedicated to the award, great to see.

1:55pm EDT - Just when it looked like Anthony Kim might be slipping, he eagles the par five 15th hole and is back in the race. Nicely done Anthony, way to make me look good.

1:52pm EDT - In the "what happened to him" category, we have Jim Furyk. It looked like good 'ole Jim was doing quite well earlier in the day but has slipped all the way back to three-over par after 12 holes.

Also on the "what happened to him" category, Vijay Singh is having a tough first day as he's three-over par after just six holes. You have to wonder if that back injury is flaring up on him again. Just doesn't look like the same guy out there.

1:46pm EDT - I just happened to see this and had to give a shoutout for it. DeMarco, looks like you got your wish, well, sort of. Anthony Kim has bogeyed three straight holes and went from three-under par to even par, four shots back of the lead. I guess the curse worked DeMarco.

1:45pm EDT - How about Tom Watson surging to the lead. By a show of hands, how many of you thought Watson would be on the top of the leaderboard, by himself no less, this deep into day one? Anyone, anyone...Buehler, Buehler...oops, sorry for the Ferris Buehler's Day Off flash back. TBS shows that movie WAY too much these days.

1:10pm EDT - I need to correct my earlier statement and my apologies to Soren Hansen. I said he was six-over par earlier after 10 holes but that is Anders Hansen that is after my very much coveted "I'm having a hard day" award.

Hansen is making me proud as he's going HARD after the award with an eight-under par score after 13. Hey Ian Woosnam, you might want to give that award up, I know you wanted to take it home and put it on your mantle but Mr. Hansen seems to want it more.

1pm EDT - David Toms has taken control of the tournament and has surged into the lead at four-under par as he plays the 18th and final hole of the day.

Right behind him, at three-under par, are Steve Marino and defending Masters champion Angel Cabrera. Looks like Angel still has his form from last year. After his, well, pitiful performance at the Shell Houston Open, I didn't think he would have the momentum.

The players currently at two-under par may make things rather interesting before the day is through. Bernard Langer, Tom Watson, Anthony Kim, Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney, and John Rollins all sit two shots back of the leader.

12:20pm EDT - Bernard Langer getting back in the game with a birdie at 14 and he got some help from former leader Steve Marino who bogeyed the par four 11th.

Now, there's a seven-way tie for the lead at two under par. Bernard Langer, David Toms, Nathan Smith, Tom Watson, Steve Marino, Anthony Kim and Angel Cabrera all at two under par.

It looks like we have a winner for my first annual "I'm having a hard day" award. Ian Woosnam wanted the award so he went out and bogeyed 14 and 16 just to prove it. He currently sits at nine-over par after 16 holes. Way to show your dedication Ian, proud of you.

But, hold your horses, Soren Hansen might be giving Woosnam a run for his money. Hansen is six-over par after just 10 holes. Come on Soren, let's see your dedication to that award, you're doing fine so far.

12:02pm EDT - Anthony Kim has joined defending Masters champion Angel Cabrera as well as veteran Tom Watson and Nathan Smith at two-under par with back-to-back birdies on five and six.

Kim was on my "watch" list and he's definitely a guy I'm rooting for. He came up with a gutsy win at the Shell Houston Open especially with a badly injured thumb that has a torn ligament in it that will require surgery. No word on when he will go under the knife or how long it will keep him out of action.

Fresno State alum Nick Watney is on the course and is even par after one. Mark O'Meara, who was holding strong at even par after eight holes, double bogeyed nine and bogeyed 11 before landing a birdie at 12 to get him back to two-over par.

Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald continue to disappoint me as both guys are four-over par after 11 holes. So much for not making me look bad boys, appreciate that.

Update on my first annual "I'm having a hard day" award. Craig Stadler and Ian Woosnam apparently both want the award because both guys are at eight-over par on the day. Stadler has two holes to go while Woosnam has three holes to play. Come on boys, take that award by the neck and don't let go.

11:42am EDT - Steve Marino still holding strong at the top of the leaderboard at three-under par heading to the back nine. Angel Cabrera and Tom Watson are lurking right behind him at two-under. I'm really rooting for Watson and I'm surprised he's holding as strong as he is right now.

Jim Furyk fell back to one-under par after a bogey at four and he's joined by a long list of golfers also at one under par. Guys like Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Anthony Kim, Paul Casey, Retief Goosen, and Hunter Mahan.

11:21am EDT - Bernard Langer slips again with bogeys at 10 and 11 and falls back to one-under par heading to the 12th.

Tom Watson, Angel Cabrera and Jim Furyk all sit at one back at two-under par.

Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Retief Goosen, and Hunter Mahan all sit at one-under par.

11:15am EDT - Looks like Angel Cabrera is getting his Masters form in order, landing birdies in two of his first three holes and is just one shot back of current leader Steve Marino who is three-under par after eight holes.

11:07am EDT - We have a battle for my first annual "I'm having a hard day" award between Craig Stadler and Ian Woosnam. Woosnam birdied eight and nine and it looked like he might have a little life inside of him. Apparently he really wants my award because he bogeyed 10 and 11 and is tied at seven-over par with Craig Stadler.

Who wants it more?

11:02am EDT - Couple of updates as a few of the first groups this morning are already deep into the back nine.

Tom Watson holding strong at two-under par through seven. Mike Weir, Paul Casey, Ernie Els, Chad Campbell, defending champion Angel Cabrera and Jim Furyk all at one-under par.

Lee Westwood had his fast start come to a screetching halt. After birdieing two and three, bogeyed four and five and is back to even par. Also sitting at even par is Mark O'Meara, Anthony Kim, Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir and Rory Sabbatini.

11:00am EDT - We have a new leader. After Bernard Langer bogeyed the 10th hole, Steve Marino is all by himself as the leader at three-under par.

10:54am EDT - An early surprise at Augusta is Ryo Ishikawa who birdied his first two holes and is two-under par playing the third hole. Could be someone to keep your eye on.

Bernard Langer, still at three-under par through nine, is now sharing the lead with Steve Marino who birdied one, two and six so far today.

10:48am EDT - After parring his first five holes, Luke Donald bogeys six and seven to fall to two-over par through seven. Making me wonder why I put him on my "players to watch" list.

10:40am EDT - Lee Westwood making his way up the leaderboard as he's two-under par after birdies at the second and third holes. Bernard Langer holding on to the lead at three-under and Tom Watson also holding strong at two-under through six.

Paul Casey and Mike Weir and both one-under so far and the par three champion from yesterday, Louis Oosthuizen has to be believing in some sort of curse now as he's two-over par, five shots back, after 12 holes.

10:32am EDT - Big ups to Craig Stadler who is going HARD after my first annual "I'm having a hard day" award. The Walrus is at seven-over par after 10 holes. Keep fighting there Walrus, you got this.

A few updates on the course so far as a few guys are making me look bad.

Luke Donald, I thought we had a conversation about making me look bad, come on now. Ok, I'm trying not to freak out just yet, I know we're only in the first round. Donald is one-over par after bogeying the sixth hole.

Ernie Els, Anthony Kim, and Paul Casey are even par after one hole, Mark O'Meara is also even par after seven holes. Defending Masters champion Angel Cabrera will be teeing off shortly as is Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson.

10:30am EDT - One quick note about the par three challenge champion, Louis Oosthuizen, he apparently doesn't believe in the jinx that comes with winning the par three challenge. My first thought would be, has anyone ever heard of this guy before? Me either.

10:25am EDT - Though it's a beautiful day at Augusta so far, as a few of the first tee times are out on the course, they are expecting possible thunderstorms around 1pm local time. That could be a wrench in the late tee times depending on how long the storm hangs around.

10:05am EDT - I just started rooting for Tom Watson. Check out the crafty veteran at two-under par through four, though he still trails the leader, another veteran in Bernard Langer who is now three-under through seven.

Rory Sabbatini got bitten by the bogey bug on the fifth hole and slips back to even par through five.

Lee Westwood is on the course and is at even par through one, Luke Donald and Mark O'Meara also holding steady at even par through four and five holes respectively.

A few tee times coming up. Paul Casey should be off the tee here shortly, Ernie Els and Anthony Kim will follow him at 10:13am EDT.

Holding on to the "I'm having a hard day award" is Craig Stadler but Ian Woosnam isn't going to let Craig have all the fun. Woosnam is also having a rough day at six-over par through eight holes.

9:40am EDT - Nothing like seeing a veteran take an early lead as Bernhard Langer is two-under par through five holes, tied with Steve Marino who is also two-under par through two holes.

A quick run down of the other names we'll be following throughout today. Rory Sabbatini is one-under par through four, crafty veteran Tom Watson is one-under through two holes, Mark O'Meara is even par through four, and Luke Donald is even through three holes.

The "I'm having a hard day" award looks like it's going to have a runaway winner with Craig Stadler who is six-over par through seven holes...ouch.

9:15am EDT - Good Morning Masters fans. What a great day for the first round of the Masters as things got going earlier this morning. Honorary starters Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus made their opening tee shots and a few of the opening tee times have already gotten off the first tees.

The early leader at this point is Bryan Gay of the United States, birding two of his first four holes.

12:30am EDT - We're just hours away from the first tee time of the 76th annual Masters Tournament, the PGA Tour's version of the Super Bowl.

For the next four days, we'll have all the updates, all the scoring, and all the changes in the leaderboard. I'll also throw in my own two cents about some of the top players and what they're doing, maybe bring a few comedic remarks about some bad shots, just to keep things lively.

So, with all that being said, here are some of the players we'll be following and their tee times (EDT) for the opening round.

Mark O'Meara teeing off at 8:45 a.m. with Rory Sabbatini and Nathan Smith.

Luke Donald and Geoff Ogilvy teeing off at 8:56 a.m. with Martin Kaymer.

Lee Westwood and Mike Weir teeing off at 9:40 a.m. with Matteo Manassero.

Paul Casey teeing off at 10:02 a.m. with Francesco Molinari and Chad Campbell.

Ernie Els and Anthony Kim teeing off at 10:13 a.m. with Ryo Ishikawa.

Instead of going through every player who we're going to be watching through the next four rounds, if they last that long, we'll tease you with these groups as we get ready for what should be an exciting four days.

We'll be updating the blog all day long until the final group finishes on Thursday night. At that point, we'll go through the leaderboard and break down the biggest movers and shakers in Day One and what to look forward to during Day Two.

We'll see you bright and early on Thursday morning. Are you ready for some golf?
