Auburn Football: Week Two Spring Practice Viewpoint
Although no leader has been named in the Auburn Quarterback competition, Cameron Newton has certainly put himself in a favorable position. It was apparent to me that this competition was a situation where one contestant simply had better tools.
There is no reason to assume at this point that Cameron Newton will not do exactly what was expected. He picked Auburn to win and lead the team—he is now well on his way to doing exactly that.
Practice Viewpoint
Auburn is going to have the best offensive line on the plains in years. There is a battle raging for the open spot. The unique part of this is, both players competing seem to posses NFL level talent. Here is a report by Andy Bitter that really says it all.
The Auburn receiving corps is stacked. Never in my memory has there been this many talented receivers on an Auburn team. I have reported this before, but it seems to be the opinion of others now.
The quarterback competition has three great prospects, but one is standing out. I expect the field to narrow very soon.
The running back situation at Auburn is of little concern for fans. Auburn is very strong at this position and will have excellent production this year. Here are some other opinions on this.
I wrote earlier about Onterio McCalebb's fitness and training. You can read another article about that here.
While so far there has not been as much coverage on the Auburn defense, to me, this is where the real story is. I expected the Auburn offense to be exceedingly good this year. At this point it looks like that is exactly how it will be.
The big question mark for 2010 is the Auburn defense. This has been the area of biggest improvement in my opinion. The defensive line looks strong going against Auburn’s offensive line (this line is loaded with NFL-caliber talent). This will likely be the strongest opponent they will face all year.
The linebackers are stronger and deeper. The changes made by the staff seem to have been good—improvement is obvious with all three positions.
The secondary is fast and will be strong. They will also be practicing against an offensive unit that can push them as far and fast as any other on the schedule. This should get them ready for anything that is ahead.
A Day is looking to be a report card that Auburn fans can be proud of.
