Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs Similarities

Nikhil BhansaliMar 29, 2010

I thought of writing this article after the Celtics lost to the Spurs. When these two teams play, they have a very similar style of play. The best players in the same position, as well as two gifted and talented young point guards.

I would like to discuss their teams by position:

1) center

The Boston Celtics have one heck of a center in Kendrick Perkins, a serious strong, but undersized bigman. If he was a 7 footer, he could have been the most dominating big man defensively in the league.

The Spurs have Antonio McDyess. Many would argue that Tim plays center, but once they are against Boston, Tim has to play. McDyess is not so similar to Perkins, but in his youth, he was pretty good, as he has averaged 1.1 blocks for his career.

2) power forward

Boston hasthe big ticket Kevin Garnett, while the Spurs have the best Pf in history (supposedly) in Tim Duncan. Many would say that KG has lost it, but hey, his presence on the court is enough and even now, he can score a lot of points. Tim Duncan is simply great, even now he is putting up great numbers for a team surrounded by a lot of talents. KG and Duncan revolutionized the PF position, which earlier used to be under the rim, but now throughout the court, they started taking mid-range jumpers and both have amazing post moves, which are pretty similar.

3) the small forward

Boston has a future hall of famer in Paul Pierce and so do the Spurs in Manu Ginobili. Many would argue that the Spurs' SF is Jefferson, but while playing against the Celtics, the Spurs always have Manu guard Pierce and vice versa. These two players are very similar, except Manu is more creative. Just look at their styles of play; both can knock down 3s, drive, score, pass, and steal equally well.

4) shooting guard

Ray-Ray and Jefferson.

These two players are completely different; just think of a sharp shooter vs a slasher.

I would say they can be compared in terms of non-productive veterans on their teams; both have finished their youth and are playing as role players in their respective teams.

5) point guard

Rondo and Tony.

This is called a rivalry in the making, although Tony didn't play the last game. He and Rondo are two of the best PGs in the league. Both are superb play-makers, good defenders, and amazing slashers, but Tony is a better shooter. Rondo is still developing his shooting, but it would be fun watching these two battling it out.

I hope to see San Antonio and Boston play in the NBA Finals, as it would be a series to be remembered as one of the greatest due to the similarities between their teams.
