Arsenal Fans Ruining Their Title Chances with Their Own Hands

Mohamed Eldin MasriMar 28, 2010

In the game against Birmingham, Manuel Almunia has made a crucial mistake, that could end Arsenal's title challenge on a very sore note.

And sadly as expected, the Arsenal fans have unleashed hell on the Spaniard, and in doing so, are ruining every chance Arsenal have in winning anything this season.

Despite the small chance Arsenal have, they have a chance nevertheless, but the Gunners fans are crushing it with their own two hands.

I am of course, referring to the hordes upon hordes of Arsnal fans that are begging and screaming for Almunia to leave in the summer.

First, let's put a few points clear.

1. Birmingham were the better team for the majority of the game.
2. Howard "Man U till I die" Webb was the referee of the match.

Throughout the game, Birmingham were a menace throughout, they used the fact that the Arsenal back-line is incomplete, Campbell was helpless against Jerome, and Song wasn't able to commit himself to tackles, thanks to Howard "I have no dignity" Webb giving him a yellow card early on in the match.

Perhaps it is pure irony, that the two factors that ruined Arsenal's season in 2008 ( Birmingham and Howard Webb) were together in the same match at almost the same crucial stage in the season, but Arsenal should have played better still.

To their credit, Birmingham played admirably, and the freak miss they've missed was rewarded with a freak goal in injury time, none can complain.

They didn't dive in the penalty box, even though Webb would've easily awarded them with a ghost penalty.

They also didn't play an aggressive over the top game of football, so that too is to be respected.

The turning points however, were all caused by Howard "People pray that I die" Webb.

Fabregas was hit outside the 18-yard box, and Diaby capitalized and scored a correct goal, but Webb cancelled it to prove that indeed, he and the FA are a group of corrupt and bribed individuals.

Football has lost dignity in England.

Webb also issued useless yellow cards to the Arsenal players, which made them unable to connect at important challenges, not to mention soft fouls out side the penalty box.

In short, Webb suffocated the Arsenal back four, and made life hell for the Arsenal team, especially when Arsenal were one goal up, and Carr fouled Arshavin who was gonna attempt to score a second, but Webb issued a yellow, when it should've been a red by his abysmal standards.

Moving on to the players.

Fabregas was playing like he had the Barcelona encounter on his mind, and with a performance like that, I doubt he will be able to make a difference against the current European Champions.

Bendtner was a ghost, Arshavin has been missing absolute sitters since coming back from injury, and Diaby and Rosicky were playing alone against Birmingham.

In the defence, Clichy dribbled well, but crossed poorly, Song was forced to limit his play because of Webb, and Campbell was out played by Jerome.

Now for Almunia, who is easily the most criticized for that dreadful mistake he made in injury time, which cost Arsenal two precious points.

But to accuse Almunia alone for wasting these two points is quite simple, wrong.

First of all, Arsenal are  playing the World Champions next Wednesday, what on earth are the fans thinking when they are ruining the confidence of their number one goalkeeper before one of, if not THE most important game for Arsenal this season

Almunia has cost Arsenal two points against Birmingham, but let's not forget he saved two points against West Ham last week, and two points against Hull City earlier in the season.

Wasted two points, saved four points, alone he has given Arsenal two pints, if not more this season.

Both games against Manchester United were not his fault, the goal conceded from Nani was an insult to injury, seeing how Arsenal were bad throughout the game, and neither were the two against Chelsea, a poor attempt to save Drogba's free kick wasn't gonna change the result of the game in anyway whatsoever, that doesn't change the fact that he should've done better.

But here is the problem with Almunia,

A great goalkeeper is some one who makes crucial saves, and avoids crucial mistakes.

Almunia has made crucial saves, but his crucial mistakes take him back to square one all over again.

Quite simply, Almunia is like Arsenal last year, beating Man U and Chelsea, then losing to Villa and Stoke.

Last season, the fans were screaming for half the team to leave, calling van Persie too injury prone, Denilson was a terrible player, and Song and Diaby not good enough to play.

The fans are attacking Almunia even more now, than last year, citing the goals of Tottenham last year and such, but even David Seaman was no stranger to shame, everyone makes mistakes.

People keep judging Almunia as of now, and keep saying that he should go in the summer, when indeed, the summer is in the future, and we need to think of the present, something that Arsenal hasn't done in a while.

I'll take a quote from Arsene Wenger on this: "Judge me in May."

Only then, can the fans all beg for Almunia out, and he won't leave unless Wenger says so.

A fans purpose is to root for his team at both times the good and bad times, if not, then we not just be fan of Man U or Barcelona, they have resources and freebies from referees on their side.

The fans also have been saying, "If we had a world class goalkeeper, we would've won trophies long ago."

I'll take another quote from Wenger here: "If doesn't exist, we live in the real world."

I truly doubt that the loss of a league title can occur because of one individual, the FA cup, maybe (Fabianski comes to mind), but a league is defined by an entire season consisting of 38 games, you can't blame it all on a single mistake or even two.

And what is baffling, is that no one has even mentioned that Fabianski should leave after his poor display against Porto in the first leg (Not saying he should leave, but that was an even bigger sin than Almunia's).

The fans need to understand, that this is the time they get behind Almunia and support him, he needs it more than ever, they're certainly not helping him or Arsenal by thrashing the guy right before a game against Barcelona.

And at the end of the season, they can pass on a final verdict, rather than to pass one now so immaturely.
