Auburn Football: Spring Practice Starts New Begining For The Tigers
As spring approaches and the flowers start to bloom, the cycle of nature starts anew. In terms of Auburn football, several players find themselves in new situations.
Daren Bates's role has been changed from safety to linebacker. Mario Fannin has moved into the tailback slot. Eltoro Freeman has another chance to shine.
Furthermore, the spotlight shines the brightest on the quarterback race, specifically for Cam Newton.
It is these new changes that always makes spring sessions exciting.
Sure, the 2010 season is still 161 days away, but these spring drills shouldn't be taken for granted.
These practices are quite invaluable not only for players but for the coaches as well.
The playbook won't be completely used, but it hones the players who are already used to the team's tempo and methods.
Head coach Gene Chizik has commented on how the practices are much smoother this year. That is a nod to having everyone, players and coaches, around for a year.
To start out spring practice, the focus has been on the offense for the most part. The defense seems to be quietly putting together another solid group. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof has players returning from injury that will make an impact immediately.
However, there is no story more compelling than with Zac Etheridge. As of now, Etheridge is taking "baby steps" in making his comeback. The attitude amongst the team is that Etheridge will make his best effort to return and play inside of Jordan-Hare.
What a comeback story that would be if it does happen.
As the flora of the Plains start to come alive again in the coming weeks, the echos of pads clashing will echo throughout.
Spring gives a fresh start to so many within the team.
Spring also gives fans new tidbits to nibble on as the days grow longer in the Deep South.
