Antonio McKee: Maximum Fighting Championship's "Mr. Lay and Pray"

Ed KappMar 25, 2010

In terms of effectiveness, Antonio McKee is literally one of the top fighters in mixed martial arts.

Unfortunately, McKee’s effectiveness is at the expense of fight fans everywhere, as McKee’s highlight reel could easily be confused with a “lay and pray” tutorial.

McKee’s mixed martial arts philosophy is very simple.

He wants to win the fight via decision, without absorbing or inflicting any real damage, so that he can go home happy while the fans go home early.

Arguably one of the best pure wrestlers in mixed martial arts today, McKee has effectively “beaten” everyone on his way to Maximum Fighting Championship gold in the lightweight division.

As essentially a pure grappler, McKee has wrestled his way to 24 professional mixed martial arts wins. Amazingly, 18 of which have come by virtue of a typically long—winded decision.

McKee has shown no aspirations to please fans by developing any type of real offense on top of a very strong wrestling base, stating many times that he does not try to put on an entertaining fight nor does he plan on developing a more fan—friendly style in an attempt to do so.

If McKee is winning bouts, he shouldn’t have to adapt a more fan—friendly style.

At the same time however, McKee’s style is widely perceived as boring and that is what is keeping him from the big show and preventing him from testing his skills against competitors like BJ Penn, Kenny Florian and Takanori Gomi.
