Post: Shanahan expect competition at QB
Some Redskins fans seem to gasp at the notion of QB Rex Grossman and a rookie Quarterback competing with QB Jason Campbell for the starting job. Please don't take this as me being a fan of Grossman, I for one did not really like the signing. Facts are facts though. The 2009 Washington Redskins finished a dismal 4-12 and noticeably gave up in many games. That's fact. That is precisely why Mike Shanahan is absolutely correct in saying that every single position on this team will be open for competition. Four wins should never secure anything for anyone. Shanahan on Tuesday said that he doesn't expect to name a starting quarterback before training camp, which means for the first time in his career, Jason Campbell will enter camp and find himself locked in a battle for the starting position. Shanahan said he'll be closely monitoring Campbell during the team's offseason conditioning programand the upcoming minicamps to determine his exact role next season. "I don't think you know until you actually work with somebody for sure exactly how they're going to handle your system," Shanahan said Wednesday morning, during the NFL owners' annual meeting. "I think Jason's handled a lot of different systems in college and pro. He's a big guy, an excellent athlete and he's a worker. So now we get a chance to let it unfold and see how it goes." Absolutely true. Both sides of the ball, as well. New systems are being put in place and given the 4-12 performance in last year's system, what makes any returning starter a must in any position given new systems being installed. Now, reality will tell you, guys like London Fletcher, Albert Haynesworth, Carlos Rogers, DeAnghelo Hall, yes, they will be starters. But, fact is, they will not be coming into training camp officially annointed starters by Shanahan and crew, nor should they. As for quarterback, don't think for one minute that Grossman has any kind of advantage because he operated one year in the Kyle Shanahan offense at Houston. It's true, he did. But, Jason Campbell has experience in the NFL in being a moderately decent quarterback, Rex Grossman does not. Read it all at
