RED ALERT: No Roids at KCI

Mark ButerbaughMar 24, 2010

The big-mini (great description) story yesterday was the ongoing Federal investigation into a drug bust that occurred last year in Polk County, Georgia, in which the Washington Nationals and Washington Capitals were named as two of many professional organization that were allegedly involved in steroids.  A thorough investigation by authorities, the Washington Capitals, and the NHL turned up no evidence and no positive test results to corroborate the story in Polk County.

Yesterday, that investigation also led to the arrest of Dr. Doug Nagel, a Chiropractor who has an office located adjacent to the KCI Complex, the Washington Capitals practice facility.

Florida authorities charged Douglas Nagel with conspiring to deliver a controlled substance — specifically steroids. The charges come after a co-defendant told police Nagel boasted of supplying steroids to members of the Washington Capitals and the Washington Nationals.

Investigators from the Polk County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office came Tuesday to the Capitals’ practice center.

The team says it has been cooperating with authorities, that there’s no evidence that Caps players received steroids and that its own investigation didn’t uncover any steroid use by team members. However, the team says Nagel treated some of its players individually.

That arrest led to a visit by Polk County officials and Federal authorities to the KCI Complex.  No evidence of any steroid or performance enhancing product was found at the facility.  The Washington Capitals organization released a statement regarding the visit.
As part of the NHL’s drug policy, Capitals players are randomly tested up to three times per year by an independent testing agency, which sends the samples to the World Anti Doping Association for testing. Capitals players have been tested twice so far this year. At no time in our history has a Capitals player ever tested positive.
Again, no evidence was found, Caps players have been tested twice randomly already this season with no positive results.  All NHL players are tested three times randomly each season.  No positive result has ever occurred with the Washington Capitals organization.  For me, I choose at this moment to believe the franchise that I hold dear and cheer for.  Why?  Because at this point, no evidence has ever pointed to franchise use or player use.  No evidence has ever been brought forth, except the word of a known liar, in which evidence has never corroborated his statement.  .  Finally, through multiple random tests mandated by the National Hockey League each season, NO Washington Capitals has EVER tested positive.  How can I pass judgment when not a signled shred of evidence is present, nor has any positive test ever occurred?
