Cavaliers' Rest of Season: Rotation, Big Z, Shaq, LeBron, Playoffs...Draft?

Spencer CarlsonMar 23, 2010

We all know that when Shaq comes back—with Z already back—that the Cleveland Cavaliers are the deepest team in the league.

They can go big, small, athletic, defense, three-point shooting, and my favorite: fast pace. The question is: What pace and rotation will they use in the playoffs?

Well, I'll tell you in the next paragraph.

When Cleveland goes into the playoffs, its rotation will look like this:

Center: Shaq (30 minutes), Big Z (18 minutes).

Power forward: Antawn (28 minutes, 10 at shooting forward), Anderson Varajeo (20 minutes), J.J. Hickson (10 minutes). Leon Powe will get J.J.'s minutes if he plays poorly. Powe brings experience as a banger inside.

Shooting forward: LeBron James (36 minutes), Jamario (five to 10 minutes).

Shooting guard: Anthony Parker (24 minutes), Jawad (16 minutes).

Point guard: Mo Williams (26 minutes), Delonte West (22 minutes).

Boobie Gibson will play few minutes; Telfair and Green will not play at all.

Offensive Style

I believe when starters are in the game—especially with Shaq or a player like a Z—the Cavs will play half court and good defense. When Varajeo, Delonte, Jawad, LeBron, and whatever power forward play together, that lineup will run up and down court and score points—because lots of people do not understand how athletic that lineup is.

Playoff Preview

In the playoffs, it should be pretty easy playing Miami in the first round and an old Boston team in the second round—and neither series should go to seven games. Then, most likely, will come the Orlando series—when I think Cleveland will not come even close to blowing it or losing a freak game at home. I'd bet you money on that.

People can say whatever they want about Orlando, but the Magic needs these things to happen in the series:

1. Dwight must stay out foul trouble.

2. The three-point shooting needs to be on.

3. Vince can't just shut it on and off like he does.

4. The bench needs to show up and not act like they missed the plane.

Orlando is great great team, but I just can't see them clicking with everything this year.  I mean, the Magic needed two last-minute threes by Resherd Lewis to take two games from us we could have won.

Big Z's return

Big Z coming back is huge in three ways:

1. Fans love him and believe he deserves a championship—which just gives him that much more drive during the playoffs.

2. He is another big man you can stick in just in case of foul trouble for other big men.

3. He can stretch a center away from the basket with his consistent mid-range shot.

LeBron's 2010 Free Agency Commandments

1. Cleveland can offer him the most money.

2. Akron is his hometown.

3. He wants a championship. Cleveland is a complete team and has a owner who can bring everyone back because he has money to spend—unlike other teams. (Although some teams have more space in payroll, Cleveland has rights to all its free agents—and if they are willing to come back, Dan Gilbert says there is no price he won't pay.)

4. Chinese ownership in Cleveland Cavaliers organization can sell LeBron merchandise in the biggest country in the world—and that just gets LeBron that much richer.

5. He can leave a legacy with one team—just like his idol, Michael Jordan.

Free Agent Possibilities

Even though Cleveland does not have a pick this NBA draft, the Cavs need a center—because of age—and a shooting guard—because of lack of ability.

Here are three undrafted free agents I think they will go after:

1.C Dexter Pittman: He reminds me of a mini-Shaq because of how big he is. He is really raw, but with development, he could be a great backup center who can play the low post and grab rebounds.

2.C Omar Samhan: He's another nice, big-quality center. He cannot jump very well, but he can go out and score with the best of them.

3. SG Jon Scheyer: He is a excellent scorer and spot shooter and also a great teammate with good court vision. He is able to pass the ball, and he is great for the corner three—but I don't think he will have as many bad games as A.P.
