NIX the NXT Camera Angles: Close-Ups Cause Eye Strain and Cost Viewers
World Wrestling Entertainment's new show "NXT" is experimenting with new camera angles. Instead of transitioning between a basic wide angle shot encompassing the ring, and various shots from the cameramen outside of the ring, NXT is using close-ups that focus in on the wrestlers.
The point of these shots is probably to give the show an "Indy" feel by making the viewer forget that the arena is surrounded by 15,000 people. Since NXT is supposedly a reality show, the WWE is trying to differentiate it stylistically from Raw and Smackdown.
I have looked at the reviews from various forums on the Internet. Reactions are mixed. Some people enjoy the new look, others hate it.
So what should the WWE do?
Get rid of it.
I don't mind the show having a different feel. The problem is, I don't want my eyes to feel strained while watching the show.
It was ok during some of the matches, but during the Jericho-Bryan match, it was almost impossible to watch when the action picked up. My eyes were hurting terribly trying to follow the performers, and I even felt a bit nauseous by the time the show was over.
I am not the only person who feels this way. Looking at some of the forums, it is apparent that a lot of wrestling fans suffer from headaches and motion sickness.
True, some people prefer the close-ups because it seems more realistic, but it is not a deal-breaker for those who like it. They will continue to watch, even if it is like Raw and Smackdown.
I will try to watch it a couple of more times, but I'm not sure if I can—it really depends on the pace of the match.
Besides, close-up shots don't necessarily means the moves look closer. Pulled punches and pulled kicks appear much closer to making contact with a wide shot.
Anyway, there is no reason fans should strain their eyes while watching wrestling. Those of us who are susceptible to headaches can't "get used to it."
Trying something new isn't a bad idea, but these shots are.
