NCAA Tournament 2010: Power Ranking the Remaining 32

Carl StineMar 20, 2010

We have now seen it all—blown calls saving power conference competitors (Michigan State, Villanova), big time players stepping up in the Big Dance (BYU's Jimmer Fredette), and a plethora of upsets.

The Madness has absolutely destroyed the first two rounds of my bracket (who picked Murray State to play Butler in the second round?), and I am sure many of you are frustrated as well at losing the office pool to the tech guy who hasn't watched a game in 15 years.

As we head into the second round of Madness, let's take a moment to place the remaining competitors in the proper pecking order.

32. Old Dominion —A win over another overrated "Big Least" team does not qualify you to move up much in the power rankings. On the other hand, thanks for contributing to the Madness by ending all talk of Luke Harangody before it even started...

31. Murray State— I would like to predict the upset for the Racers, but Butler really showed me something in toughing it out over UTEP.

30. Ohio— Sorry, Tennessee will be ready for you, unlike Georgetown.

29. Butler— Interesting match-up against the Racers, but you still have not proven anything.

28. Mizzou— Tigers, meet Montaineers.

27. Georgia Tech —The Yellow Jackets looked solid against Okie Lite, but they will not slow Evan Turner and David Lighty.

26. Washington— Hobson's return hinders the Huskies chances of making it to the Sweet Sixteen.

25. California— Duke's next sacrificial lamb...

24. Wake Forest— Good win over Texas, but Kentucky and super frosh John Wall are another story.

23. Cornell— Interesting game coming up against Bo Ryan's Wisconsin Badgers. If they hope to take the Badgers, they will have to continue to hit their trifectas.

22. Northern Iowa —Should give the Jayhawks a fight, but Farokmanesh and co. fade at the end.

21. Gonzaga —Matt Bouldin and Elias Harris make a dangerous duo...look for Harris on an NBA court near you next season.

20. Villanova— Pretender, 'Nuff said.

19. Saint Mary's— Surprise win over Richmond coupled with 'Nova's struggles against Robert Morris should have the Gaels smelling blood.

18. Xavier— If they did not have Pitt, I would say Sweet Sixteen for X, but the match-ups just don't look good.

17. Maryland— I did not know it was possible for one human being to have that much hair product on their head at one time...way to go General Greivis.

16. Purdue— Beating Siena was a big win for the Hummel-less Boilers, but taking A&M will be very difficult...exit this way, Boilermakers.

15. Texas A&M —Right now, Mark Turgeon and friends are licking their chops about playing Purdue.

14. Tennessee— Ohio will not be able to take Bruce Pearl and the Vols, and Wayne Chism will step up in a big way in this one.

13. Michigan State— Kalin Lucas is officially hot. His 25 point performance against New Mexico State in the first round was a career-high performance.

12. Pitt— I was a little indecisive with this one, simply because of the way the Big East has tanked in the first round, but decided I like the way the Panthers match-up with Xavier.

11. Wisconsin— The Badgers dropped a few spots in my rankings by letting Wofford hang around, and the Terriers blew a chance to tie at the end. I still think they are one of only two teams in the East region that has a better than even shot at taking out Kentucky. And Badgers forward Jon Leuer is a match-up nightmare.

10. Kansas State— Jacob Pullen and the rest of the fighting purple Wildcats better be on top of their game against Jimmer Fredette and BYU. I smell upset.

9. New Mexico —With Marquette going down, the road to a Sweet Sixteen battle with WVU next week looks very promising for the Lobos.

8. Baylor— The Bears have been inconsistent at times this year, but in the weakest bracket in many years, I think they are Elite Eight bound. And besides the whole bracket thing, nobody can contain Ekpe Udoh.

7. BYU —Jimmer Fredette, need I say more?

6. Ohio State —Evan Turner, contrary to popular opinion, is not alone on this team. David Lighty is his wingman, and they create a very lethal one-two punch on the basketball court.

5. Kentucky —John Wall is very good, but not good enough to take the Wildcats to Indianapolis.

4. Duke —Hate to beat a dead horse, but with the weakest bracket in the history of mankind (there were tougher brackets in the women's tourney), Duke will make the final four and fall to WVU. Scheyer is overrated.

3. Syracuse —Wesley Johnson is a freak. Jim Boeheim is a genius.

2. West Virginia— The Mountaineers are good, very good. And Devin Ebanks and Da'sean Butler are the main reasons why the Mountaineers are in my bracket as the runner-up to Kansas.

1. Kansas— Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk! Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich lead this balanced, dangerous team to the championship. Barring a colossal melt-down, the Jayhawks will be in the championship.

There you have it, my rankings, 32-1 of the teams remaining in the tournament.

Agree, disagree, think i'm an imbecile? Let me know...
