NCAA Tournament 2010: Power Ranking the Remaining 32 Teams

Michael PintoMar 20, 2010

The first round of the NCAA Tournament came to a close last night and 32 teams remain in the chase for the National Championship. The second day of games featured more surprising upsets and solid showings from top-seeded teams.

As we head into the second round of action, here's a look at the rankings for the remaining Tournament field.

1.Kentucky

John Wall looked like his usual self in the round one route, but DeMarcus Cousins struggled. Luckily for the Wildcats, freshman guard Eric Bledsoe stepped up with eight three-pointers and 29 points.

If Kentucky continues to get performances like that out of their rotation, they'll be the team to beat.

2. Duke

Kyle Singler looked solid as the Blue Devils dominated Arkansas-Pine Bluff in round one. Duke shot the ball well, rebounded well, and played suffocating defense. They did everything a No. 1 seed should do in round one when other top dogs weren't as impressive.

3. Kansas

The Jayhawks struggled with a scrappy Lehigh squad in round one and almost made the wrong kind of history.

They eventually were able to pull away, but that kind of performance was the last thing expected from the Tounrament's top seed. They'll need to get back on track against stiffer competition in round two when they face off with Northern Iowa.

4. West Virgina

In a different year, the Mountaineers would have been a No. 1 seed as they definitely have the talent.

In round one WV crushed Morgan State, the best 15-seed in the Tournament. A favorable matchup with Missouri coming up, and then a likely meeting with New Mexico, the only team that really appears to be between the Mountaineers and the Final Four is Kentucky.

5. Syracuse

They lost a lot of steam heading into the Tournament after a bad end to the regular season and a quick exit in the Big East Tournament. With Arinze Onuaku out of the lineup in round one, it seemed the Orangemen might struggle but they took care of business in a 79-56 route of Vermont.

Onuaku probably isn't going to play in round two either, but if Syracuse is going to get past Gonzaga, they'll need to duplicate their solid all-around performance from the opening round.

6. Ohio State

The Buckeyes did exactly what they were supposed to do in round one, but the competition is stiff this time around.

Georgia Tech is extremely athletic and has the size advantage in the round two matchup. If Ohio State's going to make a deep run in the Tournament, Evan Turner will need to shoot a lot better than his 2-13 performance against UC Santa Barbara.

7.Kansas State

The Wildcats put up a great showing in round one, but the competition is much tougher this time around. With BYU headed their way, round two should give us a much better idea of exactly what this K-State team is capable of.

They have the talent to go deep.

8. Baylor

The Bears performance in round one didn't emit the type of confidence you'd like to see early in the Tournament, but they were still able to get it done on a day a lot of good teams struggled.

Old Dominion proved they're no push-over though, and a repeat performance like Baylor's showing against Sam Houston State will get them knocked out of the Tournament.

9. Pittsburgh

Pitt probably has the toughest road ahead of all the teams in the Tournament.

They dominated Oakland in round one just like they were supposed to, but to reach the Final Four, they'll likely need to get past K-State and Syracuse.

Before they can even do that though, they'll need to beat a tough Xavier team in round two in what will be one of the most competitive contests of the round.

10. Villanova

Another good team that didn't play nearly as well as expected in round one.

It's always a little disturbing to see this kind of struggle early from teams like Villanova. They barely avoided a major embarrassment against Robert Morris.

In round two, Saint Mary's presents a much bigger challenge.

This could be it for the Wildcats.

11. Xavier

The Musketeers are better than their sixth-seed suggests.

They looked solid in round one, but at the end of the day, this team will only go as far as Jordan Crawford takes them. With the way Crawford is playing, that could be very far. If they get past Pitt, Xavier is a team to watch out for.

They could get hot and make a serious run in this Tourney.

12. Maryland

The Terps didn't have much trouble disposing of a feisty Houston team in round one and now get a nice draw against Michigan State.

The Spartans didn't inspire much confidence in the opening round and this should be a contest Maryland walks away from with a W.

With the way Jordan Williams is playing, the Terrapins could so Kansas a real fight in the Sweet 16.

13. Wisconson

The Badgers are consistent on both sides of the floor. They don't make many mistakes and will beat you with solid defense and shooting. Wisconsin is a tough team in any matchup, but in round two they get a Cornell team no one really wants to face right now.

After what the Big Red did to Temple, Trevon Hughes, Jon Leuer, and the rest of the Badgers better come ready to play.

14. Butler

The Bulldogs put up a good showing in round one against a very athletic UTEP squad. They were expected to struggle offensively, but impressed with .419 shooting from downtown. Still you'd like to see a better all around showing.

Shelvin Mack probably won't be able to duplicate his 7-9 three-point shooting a second time around.

Butler gets Murray State in round two, could be another upset brewing.

15. Texas A&M

They took care of business against Utah State in round one and now get Purdue sans Robert Hummel. If freshman guard Khris Middleton keeps playing they way he's been lately, we could be seeing an A&M against Duke matchup in the Sweet 16.

16. Purdue

Without Robert Hummel, Purdue struggled to get anything going offensively. That's exactly what the Selection Committee expected to happen when they didn't show them much love in the brackets.

Still, the Boilermakers did beat a solid Siena team in round one, the matchup with A&M should be a good one.

17. New Mexico

They struggled way too much in round one to inspire much confidence going forward. Montana just isn't a very good team, New Mexico should've handled them better.

After seeing what Washington did against Marquette, The Lobos should be worried; they need to step it up.

18. Saint Mary's

These guys can shoot, and shoot, and shoot. Saint Mary's is one of the hottest offensive teams in the country. They looked great against an underrated Richmond squad in round one, and draw a great matchup in round two.

If Villanova plays as poorly as they did in round one, the Gaels will roll through to the Sweet 16.

19. California

Very few people expected Louisville to come into round one without being ready to play. The Cardinals rarely play two bad games in a row, but the Golden Bears made sure that's exactly what happened on Friday.

Cal dominated, but the competition is much stiffer this time around; it will take a lot for them to upset Duke.

20. Tennessee

The Vols didn't look too good in round one, but they still managed to close out the game and avoid the early exit.

They'll be happy to face off with Ohio in round two rather than Georgetown after the most unlikely upset thus far in the Tournament.

Still, the way Ohio played shouldn't inspire too much confidence in Tennessee right now.

21.Brigham Young

BYU was able to grind it out in a very tight OT game against Florida. They looked good on both ends of the floor and should have a nice game in round two. But after a contest like that, they must have emptied a lot of their tank.

K-State is up next and the Wildcats will look to take advantage with an up-tempo game. It will take a lot for BYU to overcome a much tougher opponent.

22. Michigan State

The Spartans should have played better in round one and that doesn't bode well for this team going forward. Teams that struggle in the first round have trouble getting it going most times and they may be the case with this Michigan State team.

With Maryland up next, a performance similar to their squeaker against New Mexico State will see the Spartans to the door.

23. Gonzaga

The Bulldogs were able to grind it out against FSU, but Syracuse is a different story. With the way this team slacks on defense, this should be the end of the line for Gonzaga.

The Orange will put up big numbers in this one.

24. Cornell

Not many people expected them to route Temple the way they did, but it'll be tough for them to continue down the upset trail.

Ryan Wittman looked fantastic in round one and if this team has any chance of getting past Wisconsin, the Big Red will need him to keep it going.

If they beat the Badgers, look out for this Cinderella.

25. Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets are athletic, very athletic. They looked good in round one in the upset over Oklahoma State, but this is probably the end of the road for them .They'll face off with Ohio State next in what should be a nice game, but one G-Tech just doesn't seem fit to win.

26. Old Dominion

In one of the nice surprises of round one, Old Dominion knocked out Notre Dame in a thrilling one-point victory. The game was a defensive matchup as good as any you'll see. They'll need that same intensity the second time around as the Monarchs face off with Baylor.

There could be an upset brewing in this one.

27. Wake Forest

In one of the best round one games, Wake Forest was able to escape Texas with an 81-80 victory. It was a nice moment for the team and they looked good in the win, but Kentucky is up next.

With the way the Wildcats are playing, Wake will be looking just to avoid getting embarrassed in round two.

28. Northern Iowa

The UNI against UNLV was one of the more anticipated matchups of round one as both teams played similar styles and looked poised for a nice outing. The game was everything it was expected to be, a contest controlled by defense and smart offense.

They get Kansas next, and while the Jayhawks didn't look at their best in round one, expect them to want to punish someone in round two; that will be an unlucky UNI team.

29. Missouri

The Tigers full-court press can cause headaches on any given night and they used it to force Clemson into making a lot of mistakes in round one. But WV is a different beast and they won't be controlled nearly as easily.

30. Washington

The Huskies pulled the last second-upset over Marquette in round one and while the game was about as close as it could've been, Washington looked very good. They face New Mexico next, which could be a good matchup for them after the way Lobos are playing.

31. Ohio

No one saw Ohio's round one upset over Georgetown. It was by far the biggest upset thus far in the Tournament and we might be seeing a rare Cinderella story brewing.

Tennessee is next on the schedule and while it should be a tough matchup, it's a winnable one.

If they do manage another upset though, look for Ohio State to put an end to their run in the Sweet 16.

32. Murray State

The Racers pulled off the major upset against Vanderbilt in round one with a 66-65 thrilling victory. They looked good in this one, especially on the defensive side.

If they'll have any chance against Butler, that same defensive tenacity needs to be there in round two.
