Michigan State Football: DeAnthony Arnett Would Be Great at State

Adam BiggersMar 17, 2010

Michigan is known for great high school basketball players—especially the Saginaw Area.

In recent years, Michigan State has landed some of the city's best hoopers.

What about football stars? What big local prep star stayed in state and went on to become a Spartan?

One name comes to mind and that's the former Saginaw Nouvel standout Blair White.

White's story at Michigan State was that of a fairytale. He went from begging to get a shot, to becoming a starter and team captain, and now he may be on his way to the NFL.

NFL or not, White serves as a prime example of what hard work can do for one's career.

DeAnthony  Arnett probably wouldn't have to lobby for an audition like White did, but he will have to work just as hard, if not harder, to secure a prime role. Hype doesn't impress college coaches that often; they want to see the proof.

Arnett is ranked in the country's Top 10 in regards to wide receivers; he's in the eighth-slot and a touts a solid four-star grade.

The Saginaw High superstar had an impressive junior campaign in 2009: He raked in 41 receptions for 876 yards—he also went to the house 10 times (just for good measure). He has reported to scout.com that he has an outstanding vertical as well—37 inches. Arnett is a threat whether he is in single or double coverage, and boasts a 4.5 40.

The downside to Arnett is his size. He measures in at 6'0, and weighs 170 pounds. He has told scouts that he's looking to add some weight in the offseason, which would likely improve his "recruitability."

Arnett is without a doubt a Div-I talent; Notre Dame, USC, and Michigan State have been said to be his top-three potential suitors.

Michigan's head football coach, Rich Rodriguez is also reportedly interested. Rodriguez would love to see Arnett go from a Trojan to a Wolverine, not a Trojan to Spartan.

The Spartans have pumped out exceptional talents from the wide out position: Andre Rison (arguably one of the NFL's all-time greats), Courtney Hawkins (current Flint Beecher Athletic Director), Derrick Mason, Devin Thomas, Mushin Muhammad, and of course, the one and only Plaxico Burress.

Known as "Plax" to the general public, Burress impressed Spartan fans during his tenure under then-coach Nick Saban. He was a first-round pick, and the rest is history.

Arnett would have big shoes to fill as a Spartan receiver—consider the men that have preceded him in East Lansing.

While no one knows for sure where he'll land, one thing is for certain: Michigan State is on his list, and he would look great in green and white.
