Five Players Who Could Be Surprise Inclusions on England's World Cup Squad

Callum D'SouzaMar 17, 2010

With the 2010 World Cup in South Africa slowly looming, it is now do or die for many players hoping to have a spot in the 23 selected. England is a side capable of threatening for the elusive trophy. Coach Fabio Capello boasts a strong squad with a endless amount of talented players to choose from.

But with still a good two months to play in the English Premier League the inevitable force of injuries will occur. We may just see many key England performers suffering injuries ensuring they will not participate in South Africa.

Here are five players who are in form, and if injuries persist or they begin to hit phenomenal form, they might just have a place in Capello's squad.

1. Kevin Davies

With Manchester United's Wayne Rooney in devastating form and set to spearhead the England front line, and the likes of Jermain Defoe, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Darren Bent all in form, it will be a tough decision to see who the five or so strikers are.

Bolton captain Kevin Davies is considered one of the best players never to play for England. Fair enough. The 32 year old has been a constant force at Bolton for over half a decade. His physicality, strength, speed, and aerial ability make him a huge threat to defenders.

Although he has a small chance of making the England squad, if injuries occur or Bolton and Davies begin to really find their feet he may just make an appearance.

2. Jack Wilshere

When Jack Wilshere burst onto the English footballing scene last season it was clear Arsene Wenger had unearthed another gem. The Arsenal midfielder, who is currently on loan at Bolton, has begun to be a great asset to Owen Coyle's side.

With a handful of appearances and a goal to his name the 18 year old is finally living up to his promise. More strong performances are bound to come so there is no reason why the teenager couldn't be considered for a spot on England's squad.

Wilshere would be largely unknown to many sides and could prove a great threatening option off the bench.

3. Sol Campbell

A shock signing for Arsenal in the January transfer window ensured Sol Campbell returned back onto the Premier League scene. After training him with the Gunners for a few months, Arsene Wenger opted to re-sign his former centre half.

Since returning the 35 year old has put in some strong shifts for Wenger, filling in strongly for injuries to Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas.

Having already been to England's last three World Cups, the imposing defender would bring great experience and leadership. Furthermore if injuries continue to grow on English centre halfs, Campbell may look like a solid option,

4.Lee Bowyer

Birmingham City have easily been the underdog team of the season. After promotion last season, Alex McLeish's side has been one of the form sides. The Blues sit eighth on the table and still have an outside chance for a place in Europe.

One of the main forces in the Birmingham side is Lee Bowyer. The 33 year old has been in sensational form and has even managed to score a handful of goals. The midfielder is a doughty contributor who is yet to add to his mere one England cap which he received in 2002.

Bowyer is proving at 33 he is still a strong player and with Birmingham in such good form there could be a place for Lee Bowyer on England's World Cup squad.

5. Matthew Etherington

Since moving to Stoke City from West Ham in 2009 the midfielder has slowly clawed his way back into England contention. With injuries and other problems still evident, the 28 year old is playing impressive football for Tony Pulis and come the business end of the season if the Englishman can continue his form he could be a surprise inclusion.
