Jim Leavitt Files Suit Against University of South Florida
The day before spring football practice, with high hopes for coach Skip Holtz and a new culture at the University of South Florida, the "other guy" won't go away quietly.
Of course, the "other guy" is former coach Jim Leavitt—the fired Jim Leavitt.
On Monday, Leavitt's legal eagles filed a 43-page lawsuit against the school and the athletic foundation.
Yes, Leavitt is after the money, the green stuff. He's trying for some of that $9 million-plus that was left on his contract when he was terminated for cause earlier this year.
Leavitt's lawyers are seeking their fees as well.
They contend USF didn't release the results of its internal/external investigation in its entirety as a matter of public record.
This suit surprises no one.
One of Leavitt's attorneys, Wil Florin, threw out this bowshot for public consumption:
"In refusing disclosure USF is either hiding evidence favorable to Coach Leavitt or has destroyed evidence to avoid being confronted with it."
Ho-hum.
Can't wait to see if this goes to trial.
Wouldn't it be great to see Leavitt take the stand, a guy who wouldn't know the truth from a Big East football championship?
USF anticipated this, knew it was coming. It's what lawyers do.
The school took its time with the investigation and was careful to make it a Human Resources issue and brought in an external investigator as well.
No doubt a small army of attorneys looked everything over before signing off on the matter.
Which brings us back to Leavitt.
He's gone, and Holtz is in. Holtz has wasted little time trying to rebuild all the bridges that Leavitt burned over the years.
Tomorrow he starts to rebuild the team.
