Weekend Wrap Up: A Big Upset and Marco Huck Gets an Exciting Knockout

Tyler CurtisMar 14, 2010

In case you didn’t hear Manny Pacquiao fought this weekend. That has been written about a lot and deservedly so. I will be staying away from that card as everyone knows what Pacquiao did and the undercard was less than stellar.

So lets get to the rest of this weekends action.

In what was the biggest upset of the weekend Marquez was upset by the unknown Mepranum. The light hitting Filipino Mepranum beat Marquez to the punch all night and that is what proved to be the difference.

Not only did Marquez get beat to the punch all night, he had a very hard time landing his own. This visibly frustrated Marquez and probably threw him off his game.

Mepranum had success all night landing the straight left hand all night. He was the better fight on this night and he knew it as his confidence grew with each round.

At the end of the night he won by scores of 99-91, 96-94, and 98-92.

Peter looked very good in his first step up fight since losing back to back fights against Vitali Klitschko and Eddie Chambers. He came in at his lowest weight since 2001.

The first round was fairly slow until Peter landed some nice overhand rights to Aguilera’s face. Peter was just getting started.

In the second round Peter stepped on the gas and landed some nice combinations before landing a crushing overhand right. He dropped Aguilera and floored him with a straight left as soon as he got back up.

Peter forced Aguilera onto the ropes and landed some punishing shots before Laurence Cole stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:24 of the second. It was an unexpected blowout for Peter and one that made a statement.

I think he needs another fight or two before stepping into the title picture but it is clear that he wants to win the title again.

Huck defended his WBO cruiserweight title against Adam Richards in relatively easy fashion. Richards said he was going to knock Huck out or get knocked out trying.

He was spot on with that. The first round was more or less a feeling out round with nothing major landing. In the second round Huck stepped up the pressure and landed some good head and body shots.

He dropped “The Swamp Donkey” in the third and ended the fight with a follow up barrage. Huck looked good against the limited Richards but he is clearly the No. 1 cruiserweight in the world right now. I strongly suggest you head over to Youtube and check this fight out if you have not seen Huck.

He has above average power and decent hand speed for a 200 pound man. I would like to see him avenge his only career loss, which came against Steve Cunningham.

Povetkin handled Mora very easily in five one sided rounds. He dropped Mora in the first with a massive left hook, and dropped him again in the second.

He punished Mora throughout the whole fight and Mora proved that he has a good chin by taking these shots for five rounds. Povetkin kept his status as Wladimir Klitschko’s IBF contender.

Hernandez cruised to a very easy points win over Crenz. Hopefully this will set Hernandez up for bigger and better things as he retained his IBF Intercontinental Title.

Frenkel followed suit and won a very easy points win over the durable trail horse Michael Simms. I would really be interested in a fight between Frenkel and Hernandez to decided who is ready for the world title level.

Pulev continued his fast rise up the heavyweight ladder as he knocked out the usually durable Batchelder. He knocked him out with a left uppercut in the second round. Pulev may be someone to keep an eye on in the future.
