TNA's X Division: Just Lip Service?

John BetschelMar 12, 2010

Recently, Jim Ross was interviewed and asked a number of different questions about TNA and the WWE.

One question he was asked is, if the WWE should bring back the Cruiserweight title, due to wrestlers like Evan Bourne, Yoshi Tatsu, and Jimmy Wang Yang probably never winning a major title due to their size, or lack there of.

Good Ol' J.R. responded by saying, and I quote, "The cruiserweights should only be brought back if they are going to be featured, and not just lip service like TNA's X Division."

Now the first thing that came to mind was, "really?"

I'd never thought of the X division being lip service, but being very talented young individuals who defy gravity and put their bodies on the line each and every match, much like the old Cruiserweights of the WWE.

Then I saw this past Monday's Impact, which had Kaz in the ring blabbing about why he left over a year and a half ago, and how he was going to be the next X Division champion.

Then Daniels comes out and starts rambling on about if anyone is going to be the next X Division champ, it's going to be him.

Doug Williams, the current X Division champ then comes out, and also starts yakking about how he is the champ, and they are both idiots for thinking they can beat him for the belt.

They then all three start arguing about how this person did this, or that person pioneered that, and so on and so forth.

Then I started thinking back to previous X Division competitors like Homicide, either of the Motor City Machine Guns, or even Jay Lethal.

All of these competitors would always come out, and instead of going straight to wrestling, like Amazing Red or Suicide would do, they would talk for five minutes before getting to the wrestling.

Now I know that's sort of a part of wrestling. One guy comes out and says he is going to beat the other guy and vise versa.

In WWE on Raw this past Monday, you didn't see Randy Orton talk about how he was going to go out and beat his former protégés, nor did you see Legacy brag on and on about how they were going to beat Orton; they just went out there and did it.

Now once again I know this is a normal part of wrestling, but the reason the wrestlers smack talk each other is to hype up the match they're getting ready to go into. Create a great build up, so the fans are already on the edge of their seats before the match even starts.

With the X division though, they don’t need to do this. We have seen the way these guys wrestle and that’s what the fans want to see them do: Wrestle, not talk.

Why spend five minutes talking when you can put that time toward a great match.

That's what I like about Amazing Red: He hardly ever talks, he just wrestles. That's why he is one of the best X Division wrestlers TNA has. He doesn't talk about what he is going to do, he just does it.

I go back to what I said in an previous article about Sting and RVD. That whole segment lasted about 10 minutes or so, and only about 45 seconds of that was the match.

The rest was Sting waffling RVD, Ref's, and then Hogan with his baseball bat. Sting and RVD are both great wrestlers, and with that time they could of put on a halfway descent match.

But I guess that's what TNA likes to do is talk. They talked and talked about how they were going to war with WWE, and how they were not going to stop until they became the top wrestling company in the business.

That didn't last very long though after last week's ratings. I read on here today that Hogan had said they are no longer trying to go to war with WWE, and were just going to focus on improving TNA as a whole.

So maybe TNA should take some advice from Good Ol' J.R.; he was already right on one thing.

J.R. was also asked if he thought TNA would put WWE out of business? He was quoted as saying...

"WWE likely won't be dinted by TNA, and WWE shouldn't be TNA's obsession. TNA should just worry about improving their brand and making more money and producing more compelling TV."

That's my opinion though; what do you think?
