Attitude Reborn!: The New Generation of The Monday Night Wars
Well my first article. Forgive me for the inevitable mistakes and be sure to leave me feedback.
Unless you've been living under a rock, there has been a major buzz in the wrestling community. Something that I've anticipated for a few years now and also, something that I've always wanted to see. The reincarnation of the Monday Night Wars. Before I go any further, let me ask you. Have you ever seen the Back To The Future trilogy? It's probably my favorite movie trilogy ever. What some people don't realise, is that the movie had scenes that repeated themselves not exactly the same way, but in such a way that it resembled its previous incarnation. Let's take the skateboard chase from the first movie. Remember when Marty decked Biff right in the kisser and booked it? When Biff and the boys chased him, Marty "borrowed" some kids skateboard and ran off. He almost got run over but somehow was able to use his wits to outsmart his opponents. He was almost killed, but with quick thinking he dodged the car and Biff's car hit a manure truck. In the second movie, Marty punched out Biff's great grandson. He ran and stole a hoverboard and used his wits to make Griff and the gang hit the clock tower. In the thrid movie, well I guess that doesn't really count but I'll save that for next time.
The point I'm trying to make is history repeats itself and the monday night wars are a prime example. Let's be honest, every wrestling fan deep down inside is happy we'yre getting some kind of excitment. I don't know about you, but midgets throwing Lucky Charms into the stands and two grown (insert bad word here) men chopping their crothes has gotten old. The attitude era was awesome because it redefined what we knew as "sports entertainment". It tried something new and took risks. Today there's nothing new on Raw or Smackdown. Just John Cena overcoming the odds again to become WWE champion. Don't get me wrong I loved John Cena as a kid, but then he had a rapper gimmick. But the thing was, it never got old. At least to me. I miss kids yelling at me for throwing up word life signs. None of my friends watch wrestling anymore because it got old. I even surveyed a couple of people and percent of them said that they didn't watch it anymore because it was the same thing over and over again.
The good thing though, is now the WWE has some competition which is something they've needed for God knows how long. Wrestling fans can finally decided whether to choose watching some guys beat the heck out of each other on USA or Spike! Another great thing about this is the new ideas that have to come up. This also brings up the PG era. Lets be honest, the only reason Vince went to the PG era was for his wife and the money. (ITS ALL ABOUT DA MONAY!) But now that Vince has to compete with something, new and new risks are going to have to be taken. I mean c'mon, if it meant millions and millions of dollars and soccer moms writing hate mail or No money and soccer moms at the shows what would you choose? I'm not saying the attitude era is coming back (As much as I'd like it to) but we finally get to see something different every Monday. Expect writing styles to change too. Even if WWE wins, we can at least say it was fun while it lasted.
On an end note, I'd like to say I love children, but I truly think this is killing WWE as far as their hardcore audience (those who actually still put up with this crap). Every now and then theres a good show like the MSG one which was flawless, but this is definitley holding them back. Anyway, hope you enjoyed my read and please comment and critique me!
