2010 NFL Free Agency: Cleveland Browns Still Engaged in Signing Players

Daniel WolfMar 8, 2010

The Cleveland Browns started off slow in the free agent market, but after signing both right tackle Tony Pashos and linebacker Scott Fujita, the Browns are not done.

According to a undisclosed league source and now NBC Sports, the Browns have targeted their next free agent in Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson.

The Browns have three tight ends on their roster, currently including Evan Moore, Robert Royal, and Steve Heiden.

Royal was brought in last year due to his ability to block on the line, but as the 2009 season progressed it was obvious that Royal has concentration issues and dropped way too many passes.

Heiden has been a rock on the Browns since 2002, but he has had his fair share of injuries the past couple of seasons and he is not getting any younger.

Moore was a great surprise in the second half of the 2009 season and is easily a keeper.

A converted wide receiver from Stanford, Moore (who is 6'6" and 255 pounds) became quarterback Brady Quinn's favorite target quickly after the bye week, but he also still has much to learn about being a tight end in the NFL.

Hence, enter the possibility of Watson joining the Browns, who could not only start immediately, but groom Moore to take over as the starter in a couple years.

At 6'3" Watson is not as tall as Moore, but they are both the same weight.

In Watson's six years with the Patriots he has 167 receptions for 2,102 yards and 20 touchdowns.

A solid pickup if the Browns can get Watson to sign on the dotted line, which will also alleviate the need to draft a tight end in April's draft.
