Legal Action Should Never Be Taken From Events On The Ice
"You know what happens on the ice stays on the ice" Words from a popular Molson Canadian add in which Canadians seem to live by.
Then why take legal action against someone because of something that has happened on the ice? I am a new member and this a response to potential legal action against Patrice Cormier of the QJMHL for his extremely questionable blindside head shot to Mikael Tam.
By all means, I am not coundoning this sort of behaviour, I just think that it should be handled within the league, not with the police.I do think the suspension was the right one, I just think legal action is wrong.

In a game that consists of bodies flying at each other at high speeds with the intent to do some damage, there are bound to be some dirty hits. Heck, fights are common, sometimes even encouraged in the game. Physical assault on another player with bare fists in the street is an offence that can send you to prison, yet no one would even bat an eye in hockey.
If someone is going to take legal action for a hit in the game, then why not take legal action for every fight? Fights are punishable in the court of law. This is the double standard in hockey.
The Burtuzzi incident, and again I am not condoning it, should have never gone to court. For those of you who don't know, Todd Bertuzzi of the Vancouver Canucks, blindsided Colorado Avalanche Forward Steve Moore and then proceeded to slam his face into the ice, this would break his neck and end his career. Moore then took Todd to court, although I am not entirely sure on the results.
There should have been some compensation for Steve Moore, for sure, but vicious things like this happen all the time in the game and to not go to court for one but do so for another is crazy. These matters have to be dealt within the league and that's that.
You would not charge a boxer or a fighter in the MMA, you would not charge a soccer player when he gets a red card. Ron Artest and company were not even charged when they faught fans, and they were not even part of the game.
Bottom line is this: Legal action should not be taken for common practises in your sport. Period.
