TNA's X-Division: It Was Fun While It Lasted

The Doctor Chris MuellerMar 6, 2010

I have been watching TNA ever since they first came to national television. I began watching TNA as an alternative to WWE, not a substitute, because they offered something different from the McMahon-run giant.

I love the X-Division most of all because it was just like the old days of great cruiserweight wrestling in WCW. There was a wealth of world class talent who didn't fit the bill in WWE who could show off their incredible in-ring style in TNA.

But now TNA seems to have done the same thing with their X-Division title as WWE did with the cruiserweight title, they seem to be phasing it out.

Now I don't want anyone to think that I know something I don't, I have no idea what the future plans for the X-Division title are, but I have a pretty good idea.

I remember watching the X-Division put on some of the most exciting matches in both singles and tag team competition.

Guys like Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, Petey Williams, Daniels, AJ Styles, Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley, Amazing Red, Kaz, Eric Young and even Samoa Joe put on some of the best matches.

Now Sabin and Shelley are in the tag title hunt, Sonjay and Petey are gone from TNA, Daniels, Joe and Styles are concerned with the world title, Young is teaming with Nash, and the only ones of the list still going for the X-Division title are Red and Kaz.

Doug Williams is a great competitor, and his finisher is very original and entertaining, but he is not X-Division material, he was better as a tag team wrestler.

Hogan and Bischoff are not even to blame here; they came in after the title and division had lost its glory.

Now TNA has the same feel, at least to me personally, as WCW did in the mid 90's.  WCW Saturday Night was closer to what iMPACT is than Raw.

If TNA truly hopes to compete with the big dogs, then they need to recognize what brought them to the fight, the X-Division.

If they want to bring the title back into the spotlight, they could very easily. Pope is one of TNA's rising stars and giving him the belt would make for some entertaining television.

Putting it on Wolfe or Kaz would also help the cause, but I don't see TNA highlighting the X-Division the way they used to anytime soon.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the X-Division?

Side note: Doug Williams is a great wrestler and I don't want to take anything away from his title reign. His finisher is one of the more impressive moves I have seen in awhile too.
