Free Agency: Who Are The Targets

Kevin LatackiMar 5, 2010

Free agency is a spot in the off-season that the Bills do not like to dip into heavily.  They often sign one or two free agents with some possibilities.  However, this offseason feels different.  The Bills want to win, and one way to aid this roster and provide depth is free agency, not the draft as some speculate.  Holding rookies as your reserve players hurts in the end, (see the 09 season).  On top of that, the Bills announced they would like to fill some holes in free agency.  So who the the Bills targeting?

Joey Porter OLB:  He played OLB in the 3-4 and dominated 2 seasons ago.  This year however the Dolphins cut back his playing time, as well as his sack total for Cameron Wake.  However, he still had 9 sacks, even with his decreased playing time.  He would be a great fit into our new 3-4 defense.  In addition, the Bills current D-coordinator was Joey Porter's linebacking coach. And now with Tully Banta Cain off the market, he could fill the OLB position for this season. One year deal anyone?

Kevin Walter WR:  He has played behind Andre Johnson since 2006.  He has been a great possession receiver for the Texans and is a major reason why Matt Schaub did so well.  Walter showed his big play ability this past season.  He is a big receiver and could easily fill the receiver position behind Evans.  And he is only 27.

Mike Gandy OT:  He was a member of the Bills for a few seasons, but as always with an above average player, the Bills let him go, and he signed with the Cardinals.  He is up in age now, but he could fill the RT position for the Bills in place of the recently retired Brad Butler.  He may be able to start another year or two, and if he would be picked up, a OT would have to be drafted to be groomed behind him.  I highly doubt this happens, but you never know.  Sign him to a two year deal.

Bryan Robinson DT:  A nose tackle is a hot commodity.  The Bills do not have one on the roster (although I feel Stroud could play it successfully).  He and Stroud could play as rotation, or in different situations.  However, I feel the Bills need to take a nos tackel in free agency and the draft to compete with Stroud.  This would be a nice pickup for the Bills to aid their movement to a 3-4 defense.
