Can Matt Flynn Fulfill the Backup Role?

C KMar 5, 2010

There is no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is goin to be the quarterback in Green Bay for quite some time. Rodgers made good friends with the turf last year and with Packers GM, Ted Thompson, not showing any urgency to keep Left Tackle, Chad Clifton, or Right Tackle, Mark Tauscher, in Green Bay; Rodgers may become better friends with the turf next year.

If Rodgers were to go down the Packers' playoff dreams would go down as well. Right now the Packers only dress two quarterbacks on gameday, Rodgers, and his backup, Matt Flynn. Flynn will be entering his third year as backup for the Packers and has made little improvement since his rookie year.

The Packers have often drafted good quarterback prospects when Brett Favre was the signal caller but as of late the Packers can't seem to find that guy to fill that backup role. Whether it be through the draft or free agency this has to be an offseason goal for Thompson and the Packers.

As of right now there isn't much in free agency that would interest the Packers so it would seem they would have to get a quarterback in the draft. The Packers have more important needs in the draft that need to be taken care of first like a realiable guy to protect the blind side of Rodgers and suring up that pass defense that was horrible against any good passing attack last year. So it would seem drafting a quarterback in the 4th or 5th rounds would be suffice. So what quarterbacks would be available in those rounds that would be worth adding to the roster? Of course Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, or Colt McCoy would be gone by this point, but would Tim Tebow from Florida be around and if he is do the Packers draft him? It could be possible but very unlikely. If Tony Pike out of Cincinatti slips down to the 4th round it would be hard for Thompson to pass him up. John Skelton out of Fordham is somewhat of an unknown but may be a steal. Also, Tim Hiller from Western Michigan or Zac Robinson from Oklahoma State may be good picks.

The draft is over a month away so a lot could change and maybe the Packers gain confidence in Flynn and don't draft a quarterback. Keep in mind Packers head coach, Mike McCarthy is one of the best in the league at teaching the quarterback position so maybe Flynn can make great strides this offseason. The regular season is a long way away right now but it should be interesting to see what the Packers do in the offseason; not just at  quarterback but other positions as well.
