Let the NCAA Basketball Rankings Debate Begin: Who's Number One?

Garrett TuckerMar 1, 2010

Who's number one?

This is a question we hear everyday throughout the year in all sports, whether it be basketball, baseball, or football, or any sport out there. It's just that important. Well, one of the greatest debates in sports just got better: Who's number one for College Basketball this week?

Last night after Purdue's loss, I was pretty confident the Orange would sit atop the polls on Monday, as did many people. As expected, Syracuse holds the spot as the top team in the land for the first time since 2003.

However, as I was watching television this afternoon, I heard a valid point and argument: Check out the losses by Syracuse, Kansas, and Kentucky and where they were located.

And the point was very right. Kansas's two losses are both true road games, where as 'Cuse has lost their two games at home in the Carrier Dome.

Here's a better look at the losses, along with the wins:

Syracuse

Notable Wins- @ Cal, Cornell, @ West Virginia, Georgetown, @ Georgetown, Villanova, and North Carolina (which was big at the time)

Losses- Louisville and Pitt

Kansas

Notable Wins- @ UCLA, @ Temple, Cal, Cornell, Baylor, @ Kansas State, and @ Texas

Losses- @ Tennessee and @ Oklahoma State

Kentucky

Notable Wins- North Carolina, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, @ Mississippi State, @ Vanderbilt,

Losses- @ South Carolina and @ Tennessee

So there you go. Which resume looks better? You can go either way on this one, but in my opinion, you can't go wrong picking one of these teams.

All three teams have some great wins, but the losses could set them apart.

The Big East the best conference in college basketball, but still, should Syracuse lose to Louisville and Pitt at home? Both of those teams are looking to get into the tournament, but the losses are still at home. Kansas and Kentucky both have great arguments on why they got snubbed this week.

Bill Self and John Calipari's teams sit in about the same shoes; Both have lost to a Tennessee team that has shown they can play with anyone come March, and they have another road loss to teams that probably should not beat them.

Now don't get me wrong, Oklahoma State and South Carolina have great fan bases and great turn-outs to every game by loyal fans. However, I don't see how anyone could put those two teams close to Kansas and Kentucky.

So, let the debate begin! Which team truly deserves the nod to be the #1 team this week?

Should the losses at home effect Jim Boeheim's team and their resume? Or did they just win at the right time and the other teams lose at a bad time?

Is Kansas and Kentucky getting robbed in the recent poll?

I'm sure all three teams can put together great arguments, but who should really be the top team in the fans' mind?

Feel free to voice your opinion on which team deserves the honor more.
