Canada Wins Gold In Hockey...So What!
Team Canada can beat its chest that it's the best team in the world because they beat the United States in the gold medal game in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, 3-2, in overtime.
Are the Canadians the best team after posting one win? No.
Canada lost to the United States 5-3 in the preliminary round and also had a shoot-out win in the prelims. Domination by Canada? Not at all.
Home ice advantage. Superstars from end to end. And they needed overtime to defeat the US? That hardly proves they are the best.
Play this game in a hotbed for hockey, like Detroit, New York, Buffalo, Philadelphia or Boston and the results might have been a bit different.
They may have won the key game, the gold medal game, but that doesn't make them the best.
You could replay the entire hockey tournament again and get completely different results. The top six teams are even and anyone could win the gold if played again....it's just a matter of breaks and bounces. The talent is even. No one is head and shoulders above the rest anymore.
One thing is for certain. Ryan Miller is the best goalie in the world right now. He was named the Olympic Most Valuable Player and ironically, he'll go head to head against Sidney Crosby Tuesday night in Pittsburgh when the NHL season resumes.
Crosby always has had Miller's number and it didn't surprise me he scored. But Miller, even in the loss, was nothing but class as were the rest of the American team.
Canada may have won the most important game and took home the gold, but I don't think it proved anything. The United States played with grit and heart. I think the Americans were the better team but unfortunately an overtime goal says it differently.
Go ahead Canada, enjoy your win. But deep inside, you know that you're not the best anymore. Look in the real view mirror...the Americans are coming, the Americans are coming.
Excuse me, I think the Americans are already here.
