The Most Powerful Puncher Since a Prime Mike Tyson Fights Tonight

Colin LinneweberFeb 6, 2010

WBC Lightweight champion Edwin “El Terminator” Valero will fight Antonio DeMarco tonight in Monterrey, Mexico.

Valero (26-0, 26KOs), who once established a world record by winning his first 18 professional fights by first round knockout, is an absolute machine and fight fans are urged to watch his ring prowess at 9 p.m. EST on Showtime.

“I’m very excited about this fight and thrilled to be fighting on Showtime,” said Valero, 28, a Venezuelan national who has become an Internet sensation because of the work he does with his savage fists.

“DeMarco is a good, young fighter who has great aspirations, like most young fighters, and I respect him a lot. But I believe my experience will be an important key. He hasn’t fought the kind of fighters I have and he hasn’t fought in world title fights. I’m very confident that once I connect with one of my power punches, he will feel it.”

DeMarco (23-1-1, 17 KOs), who is impressively unbeaten in his past 16 bouts, was born in Mexico and he will certainly have his share of supporters in the audience.

“Valero’s a great champion of the world and it’s an honor to get into the ring with him,” said DeMarco, 24. “I have a lot of respect for him as a person and for what he’s accomplished. There’s a reason he’s a champ and he deserves all the accolades. But, for me, once I get in the ring, it is my job to win and walk away victorious.”

Despite his apparent confidence, DeMarco will be utterly battered by Valero.

Valero, a fighter who has allowed only five opponents to survive more than five rounds, is the greatest pound-for-pound power puncher since a prime Mike Tyson in the mid-1980s.

“El Terminator” would surely be one of the most recognized names in the entire sport of boxing if it wasn’t for the various plights he’s endured.

Major sanctioning bodies have mainly refused to sanction his matches because of a fractured skull and blood clot on his brain that he suffered in a motorcycle accident in February 2001.

Valero signed with Top Rank in 2007 and its founder and CEO, Bob Arum, pressed Texas to issue him a license after he passed a battery of medical exams the following March.

Finally permitted to battle in “The Lone Star State,” Valero brutalized Antonio Pitalua in Austin by a second round TKO to capture a vacant title.

Realizing Valero’s tremendous fighting abilities and vast marketability, Arum even mentioned “El Terminator” as a potential opponent for WBO world welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs).

Unfortunately for Valero, he got pinched for drunk driving and he subsequently was unable to enter the U.S. sans his visa.

“Fighting in Mexico is actually a benefit for me and I look forward to it,” claimed Valero. “Mexican fans are great fans and they know this sport very well.”

Both those in attendance and watching on television should understand that DeMarco simply has zero chance “to win and walk away victorious.”

The only legitimate question entering this matchup is how many rounds it will take before Valero knocks DeMarco unconscious on Queer Street.
