Capello Strips John Terry of The England Captaincy! A Complete Travesty.

...Feb 5, 2010

John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy following the much publicized allegations over his private life.

The masterful centre-back held a meeting with Capello at Wembley following a week of tabloid allegations concerning an alleged affair with an ex partner of Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge.

The story kept circulating whilst everybody were waiting for Capello to come back from his trip to Switzerland and deal with the matter.

Capello has now axed Terry of his duties in, according to reports, a 12 minute meeting and it remains to be seen who he gives it to.

The question now has to be asked - Sholdn't Capello follow that up by dropping Terry from the squad all together?

Terry's status in the dressing room has come under serious scrutiny and it is the general consensus that teammates have lost the respect and trust in their captain but whether Terry is the captain or not, he is still going to be in that dressing room. So won't the same underlying problems still be there?

The fact that Capello doesn't deem Terry a suitable captain any longer is strange.

When most pundits expected Capello to name Rio Ferdinand as his skipper prior to the friendly with the Czech Republic in August 2008, the Italian instead turned to Terry as his on-pitch leader.

It was felt the Chelsea star was better at galvanising players around him, with Capello paying little attention to the wider role many believed Ferdinand was more capable of fulfilling.

So what has changed now?

Capello must have known about Terry's dodgy off-the-pitch character when he appointed him but still went ahead and made him his right hand man.

Terry has always had negative attention following him throughout his career.

Urinating in public and taunting and making fun of Americans after the 9/11 attacks is a few of the things Terry has allegedly been guilty of in the past.

He has also been accused of using his role as England skipper for personal gain when an agency to which he was linked included his status in an e-mail offering the player's services to enhance their business.

However, his leadership skills on the pitch has never been questioned.

Now that Tery is out of the way, the question remains - Who does Capello give it to now?

These are the obvious candidates:

  • Liverpool star Steven Gerrard.
  • Manchester United pair Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.
  • Terry's Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard.
  • AC Milan midfielder David Beckham.

None of these, however, are sqeaky clean (apart from Lampard) and even if they were, Im sure the media would do something to change that very quickly.

Will this change affect the teams World Cup chances?

Quite frankly, it depends on what Capello does from here on. Who and how he appoints his new captain will go a long way in determing the mind-set of the Italian tactitian.

What he does with Terry is another important factor. He has relieved him of his duties but how he sorts out the blatant underlying issues that will obviously still be there as long as Terry is in that dressing room will be under the microscope for a long time yet..

Terry released a short and brief statement, "I fully respect Fabio Capello's decision. I will continue to give everything for England."

I for one think that, unless Capello follows this up by dropping Terry all together, it is all a bit pointless...
