MMA's Pound for Pound Best Fighters Weaknesses.

D ChristianDec 31, 2009

A different twist to your favorite debate. Instead of looking at a fighters strength I thought it would be interesting to look at the best fighters possible weaknesses.

1. Anderson Silva: The Spider’s obvious weakness is his lack of wrestling skills. His  stamina is still unproven so it could be another weakness and let’s face it when he feels he isn’t challenged he tends to be careless and showboats which leaves holes in his defense. As good of a fighter he is, it only requires one lucky punch ask Cung Lee and he will testify to my point.

2. Georges St.-Pierre: GSP has all the tools except his own attitude towards professional fighting limits the amount of damage he is willing to incur. Although his game plan for his fights are very pensive and probably the best of the four. His mind functions within the boundaries of an athlete approaching any sport as opposed to a warrior that will do anything to win and survive. He will not take any chances that could potentially cause him long term injuries. It explains his early tap out against Hughes and Serra at UFC 50 and UFC 69 respectively. He also lacks knock out power but that might change with his new muscle gain. Note GSP’s chin might be a weak factor but it is still inconclusive. After 21 professional fights he still hasn’t been knocked out and the only round he has ever lost was when he got clipped behind the head which affected his equilibrium but was still able to withstand many punches to the jaw without blacking out.

3. Fedor Emelianenko: The invincible one clearly is the least refined and technical of the bunch. His skin marks easily and he will receive the most pounding of the four but luckily his granite chin will succumb to nothing less than to an iron fist of which he luckily only possess in his weight class. Does not have the equivalent muscle strength of the bigger heavyweights and until they add a super heavyweight class he is susceptible of being pinned down and “blanketed” by a stronger heavier fighter. That is if that opponent is capable of holding off the Russian sambo fighter's many reversals and submissions attempt.

4. B J Penn: Baby J lives up to his name. Fortunately for many years his prodigious skills were enough to compete in combat sports but this gift as been a double edge sword of sort. He has been portrayed in the media has being a poor loser and seems to dwell too long on losses (example previously Pulver, Hughes and now St-Pierre). He tends to have mental hang-ups towards training and arguably has the weakest camp of the four therefore as the old saying goes “ as iron sharpens iron” it limits his growth and potential.  His smaller frame is due obviously to his lack of effort in weight training. At this present time, the Hawaiian as cemented himself as the least likely of the four to be able to win a championship in a heavier weight class because the size gain significantly diminishes his speed and power.
