Keys to the Wolf Den: Ramon Sessions Needs To Start Over Jonny Flynn

Timber WolfDec 30, 2009

Why can't Jonny Flynn rack up assists?

Is it the talent around him?

I don't think so...Jonny Flynn has Al Jefferson in the post, Kevin Love in the mid-range, Ronnie Brewer on the fast break, and a bunch of other assets that have allowed Flynn to have nights where he racks up five assists or better.

Is it the triangle offense?

No way, Kevin Love racked up nine assists against the Utah Jazz.

Jonny Flynn was the sixth pick in the 2009 NBA draft, and while his upside is tremendous, it's safe to say the same for his competition: Ramon Sessions.

Ramon Sessions is a pure playmaker, an organizer, and a true floor general.

I'm convinced by watching the games and logic that Jonny Flynn should not be in the starting lineup.

What Jonny Flynn can do, however, is score the basketball, which is one thing that the Minnesota Timberwolves bench desperately needs. Ryan Gomes and Wayne Ellington have been shouldering the load. The last thing the 'Wolves need on the bench is a distributor for players that aren't going to be on the floor for long periods of time.

Ramon Sessions can get his teammates involved, as we've seen in his game in which he had 24 assists while playing for the Milwaukee Bucks, a record Brandon Jennings might never catch.

The Timberwolves bench has no true depth. I argue that Jonny Flynn moving to the bench to rack up his 24 minutes there would be ideal for the Wolves' situation.

PG—Ramon Sessions

SG—Corey Brewer

SF—Damien Wilkins

PF—Kevin Love

C—Al Jefferson

This starting lineup would suffer from the three-point line without Jonny, but Flynn isn't exactly a "sharpshooter," and it does give the Wolves a better chance on defense with Ramon and Corey occupying the guard positions.

PG—Jonny Flynn

SG—Wayne Ellington

SF—Alando Tucker (I'm taking this guy over Sasha Pavlovic.)

PF—Ryan Gomes

C—Ryan Hollins

How about that for a bench? Not bad...for the Timberwolves anyway.

Why put Jonny Flynn on the bench?

Is he that bad?

No...he's far from bad as a scorer, but as a distributor he just does not get it done all the time. This explains why, for the past three games, Ramon has been getting more minutes than Jonny, and although he does not complain, I figure if you let this pup loose to score, he can put up 20 a night.

The reason for the Wolves' success against the last team they beat (Wizards) was Sessions.

He got teammates involved, got to the free throw line (which is A WORK IN PROGRESS), took smart shots, rebounded the ball, pushed the tempo, and did not turn the ball over due to silly passes.

If you'rr still not convinced, think this over...

How many times has Jonny screwed up and Ramon came in and made things better? Think of an estimate...more than a few right?

How many times have you seen Sessions screw up and Jonny come in to make things better? Can you give me one time?

Call me crazy, but if I'm the head coach, Jonny is my sixth man this year, and my future in the future.

Thanks for reading!
