Note to TNA: Do Not Sign Tommy Dreamer
On January 4th, TNA Impact goes head to head with Monday Night Raw. Hulk Hogan will make his grand debut and plans to shake up the Impact Zone. He has already hinted that he will bring several blasts from the past with him. Scott Hall, X-Pac, and Ric Flair are a few of the potential stars who could be brought to TNA.
Last night Tommy Dreamer, the heart of soul of ECW, wrestled his final match for the WWE. It was a very emotional send off and I choked up a bit as he took off his ECW t-shirt and left it in the ring. He is rumored to be headed to TNA once his 90 day no compete clause is up. Dixie Carter should not sign one of the most passionate stars of the 90s.
Believe it or not Tommy Dreamer is 38, younger than Chris Jericho. This does not show. His in-ring abilities are no where near what they used to be and cannot compete at the level that many wrestlers his age can. Even during his title run last summer I felt than stars such as Christian and Jack Swagger had to slow down to make Dreamer look better.
If TNA signed Dreamer he would join some of his former ECW buddies. I'm sure some fans of TNA would love for this to happen. There was a loud ECW chant when Taz made his debut a few months ago. This is not good for the company however.
Many people have criticized the Hulk Hogan signing because they claim it will draw attention away from the younger stars. They are right. Hogan is a necessary signing though. Hogan brings name recognition with him and will draw new fans to the product. As long as Bischoff and Carter are smart, the younger stars can still remain in the picture.
Dreamer's entrance into the company would most likely lead to the formation of an ECW faction. Team 3D, Dr. Stevie, Raven, and Taz are just a few of the ECW originals currently in TNA. An ECW faction would take away from the younger talent even more. Between Hogan and the ECW originals there would be no room for Desmond Wolfe, A.J. Styles, and the rest of the young stars.
Rob Van Dam is also rumored to be joining the company. This would not lead to an ECW faction as Van Dam has had success outside of ECW. The name Tommy Dreamer goes hand in hand with ECW.
We are approaching a new decade. This means new stars and new memories. TNA does not need any more people who can not deliver a good product anymore. ECW did not last long and TNA won't either if it repeats the mistakes of the past. The company has plenty of young talent. Hogan was a publicity move. Dreamer won't bring millions of fans with him and should not come at all.
Shawn Michaels mouthed the words "I'm sorry, I love you" to Ric Flair before he ended his career (until he needed more money). I'm sorry to have written this article about Tommy Dreamer but he has no business in TNA.
