Boise State Broncos: Devastated By Key Injuries, Yet too Deep to Be Upset
This second of a three part story focus’s on the Boise State Broncos current status in their WAC association and overall tenacity to win on the gridiron year after year. The Broncos began their winning ways quite early on! Boise State won two national championships; the first as a junior college team in 1958 and the last in 1980 when Boise State represented the Division 1-AA Big Sky conference. The proud Broncos of Boise State know how to win and moreover know that to continue doing so in a highly competitive Division 1-A system that they must put themselves in position to win each and every year. That can only be accomplished via quality recruiting and maintained yearly through excellence in trainings.
The Boise State Broncos are deep in talent, more so now than ever. Certainly the proof is in the pudding. Boise State was hit hard with injuries early from pre-season even to its most recent practices as the Broncos are preparing for the BCS Fiesta Bowl game against TCU.
All season long Boise State has had injuries to players that proved to be season ending, if not career ending. Yet Boise State has pulled players from within their vast pool of multi-talented individuals, filled the needed positions, and did so remarkably. The result another undefeated season!
The most amazing consistency appeared to come from the running backs even though the Broncos were hit hardest there. The Bronco RB’s no longer deep but very efficient and more than capable to pull their own weight.
Another area that fell hard to casualty was wide receiver and still the Broncos were deep enough talent wise to avoid pulling from the redshirt roster. Barring unforeseen circumstance and there are no more injuries to any of the remaining receivers Boise State will still be ok come Bowl time.
Tyler Shoemaker who has been absent from the Broncos active list for a while due to a hernia has recovered and will be available for part of the game.
Austin Pettis is recovering from a broken bone and is said to be making incredible improvement, his status may be in part as well but many believe he and Titus Young will be lined up for most of the game leaving Shoe and Kellen Moore’s brother Kirby to fill the slot.
The tight ends are solid but the line has taken a back step at the right tackle position. That spot had seen Ames, the initial starter fall to injury and Pendergast replace him.
Pendergast did a marvelous job and all was well till Bowl practice when Pendergast broke a bone and was informed his play for the rest of the season had come to its conclusion.
Well, Boise State was not without options but Ames is ready and that spot is not of concern any longer.
Basically the Broncos are sitting good. All they need to do to pull off a win in this season’s Fiesta Bowl is protect Kellen, don’t turn over the ball, and refrain from penalties; all else will take care of itself, that is as long as Boise State does not put in their fourth string and go into a prevent defense in the final minutes of the game. And that’s another story.
Merry X-mas and Go Broncos!
