Seahawks at The Tundra: What This Game Means For The Packers

Ryan CookDec 23, 2009

In what many NFL fans believe to be a walkover game for Green Bay next week, Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy think differently.  The Packers, already coming off a tight and tough loss to a previously "dead" Pittsburgh Steelers last week, will certainly take the field on Sunday with a boatload of confidence as they try and make their current 9-5 season have meaning.

The current NFC Wildcard Race is red hot.  Dallas sitting at an impressive 10-4 are fresh off their win in New Orleans last week, and are heading to FedEx field with smiles on their faces and finally, a win in December.  The Giants also showed what they are all about, demolishing a humorous and pathetic Washington Redskins team who struggled to execute even the simplest of plays Monday Night.

What does this all mean for the Packers though?  Well it's simple.  Green Bay can't afford to lose, especially not to a Seattle Seahawks team that struggled to post points against the Bucs last week, and are going from bad to worse in what seems like, every drive they play.

One loss and it could all be over for Green Bay.  However, a win at Lambeau would not only clinch a Wildcard Berth for Green Bay, it would also make the following game against Arizona insignificant which will come to a relief to Packer fans as an away game at the University of Phoenix Stadium is no cakewalk by any stretch of the imagination.

Stats wise, Green Bay is looking good.  Rodgers is the Top Quarterback in the league this week with a QB rating of 102.4, and a 3 TD game against the Steelers last week.  One concern for Packer fans is of course the defense as they were blatantly exposed last week and looked tired and fray at points in the game (particularly the final play).

Although it is a concern, it's not a big worry.  Charles Woodson is still playing lights out, and Clay Matthews is coming off a career game last week.  After all, it's not like the Seahawks are exactly the 1972 Dolphins, are they?

Seattle struggled helplessly with Tampa Bay last week, and fell to a disappointing 5-9 on the season.  After the game Matt Hasselbeck stated "I've got to be better for my teammates, I just really feel like I let a lot of people down today. It's my fault. It's on me."

A win at Lambeau for the Packers and the envelope is sealed.  From 6-10 to 10-5, or possibly 10-6 is a certainty.  The Seahawks haven't won at Lambeau since 1999, so the odds look good.  For our sake, lets hope the Packers win.  It would certainly make things easier to figure out.
