Boise State's 2010 Recruiting Class: All Five Of Them!!
Football scholarships to Boise State in 2010 are like solid gold. The value of an offer to play football on 'the blue' for the Broncos has skyrocketed this year.
Why all of a sudden are the BSU football scholarships at such a high premium?
Perhaps that’s because there are only five of them this year.
Five?
How can that be the case?
A Division One football program will generally have a fairly consistent number of scholarships to offer year-in and year-out.
Oddly, that's not the case at Boise State in 2010.
Over the past five years, BSU has offered 16 to 21 scholarships per year with the lone exception being 2007 when they awarded 30 scholarships. So why only five recruits this year?
Strange things happen in college football.
BSU has had a number of players leave for the NFL over the past three or four years, lost a couple to grades, had a few transfer, and of course a few quit the program.
These situations occur in every college football program, but generally it will not affect one particular year as much as it's affected BSU in 2010.
Is Boise State in for a serious loss of talent in the next couple of years?
Not to worry.
On this year’s two-deep roster, the Broncos list three seniors, 15 juniors, 20 sophomores, and 13 freshmen (Some positions list three deep because of rotating starters).
So how does a coaching staff decide where they are going to spend only five scholarships? Very carefully.
BSU has signed only one four-star recruit in the history of the program. That player was Jeremy Childs (WR) who signed with the Broncos in 2005 and left the program after the 2008 season for the NFL.
The Broncos have had increasing success in the quality of athlete they recruit over the past few years. Not too many years ago Boise State signed mostly two-star and a few three-star players in each recruiting class.
With on-field success and greater program visibility, BSU is making more inroads with higher rated recruits. The 2010 class is a good example of that success.
Boise State has averaged 2.3 stars per recruit over the past five years. The 2010 recruiting class will come onto 'the blue' averaging 3.0 stars per committed player. That is a significant increase in the quality of the average BSU recruit.
Leading this year's class is the Bronco's second ever four-star recruit.
Tyrone Crawford from Ontario, Canada via Bakersfield Junior College is a 6'5'', 260-pound defensive end.
Crawford brings quickness, size, and strength and is strong enough to play inside and is quick enough to play defensive end.
He could be a real force for the BSU defense as early as next year.
Grant Hedrick, a 6'1'', 180-pound three-star rated quarterback from Independence, Oregon is the state's all-time total yardage record holder.
Grant is the son of a successful high school head coach and has great physical tools in addition to a solid understanding of the game both offensively and defensively.
Sound a little familiar?
Perhaps Boise State has moved to a new recruiting profile for quarterbacks.
Kellen Moore, BSU's current all-American quarterback is also the son of a successful high school head coach and is the all-time record holder of a number of Washington State high school passing records.
Hedrick passed for 7,975 yards and 103 touchdowns during his high school career and ran for 3,259 yards (8.08 yd. per rush) scoring 42 touchdowns.
His total yardage of 11,234 yards and 145 touchdowns are Oregon State records. He has an NCAA equivalent passer rating of 187.0.
Grant gave the Broncos an early (June) commitment.
"It just felt right at BSU so I gave an early commitment" Hedrick said. With the Bronco's depth at quarterback expect Hedrick to red shirt in 2010.
Every college coach is looking for great speed in the secondary and Boise State found that quickness in three-star recruit Bryan Douglas. Douglas is a 5'10'', 165-pound cornerback from Harbor City, Calif. with outstanding cover skills and 4.4 speed.
"I feel honored to have been offered one of only five scholarships to Boise State" Douglas said. "It made me feel like they really wanted me. I feel very special."
Troy Ware also brings speed to the BSU program.
Ware is a 6'2'', 175-pound wide receiver from Vista, Calif. and was also recruited by many programs for his size, speed, and great hands.
Troy impressed many coaches over the summer at a number of elite player camps throughout the west.
With a fairly deep roster at wide receiver, Ware will probably redshirt in 2010.
Boise State generally finds a high quality recruit in its own backyard each year and 2010's class is no exception.
Kyle Sosnowski is a 3 time all-Idaho tight end/safety who is 6'3'', 203-pounds out of Capital High School in Boise.
Sosnowski, rated a two-star recruit was the second highest rated player in the State of Idaho last year and also had scholarship offers from other programs.
He joins a number of Boise-area players on the BSU roster. With a name like Sosnowski, you know he must be a great football player.
BSU's 2010 class of five recruits may be small in number but clearly they are large in talent.
Bronco fans look forward to welcoming these fine young men to the famous blue turf next season.
BSU will return 21 out of 22 of this year's Fiesta Bowl starters for the 2010 season and are projected to be a top-five team.
With the high number of sophomores and freshmen listed on the two-deep roster BSU will continue to be a force in the years to come.
