Paul Pierce's Blogging Is Like Mayonnaise

Lee HermanDec 23, 2009

I have mixed feelings about Paul Pierce blogging.  It’s like when you ask for no mayo on a Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich but it comes slathered in the disgustingness that is egg whites fermented by the sun.  Ok, maybe that’s not how it’s made but it’s still disgusting.  At any rate, you are pumped to have that sandwich but that mayo is something you didn’t ask for and have to scrape off with a napkin before you can eat.  That’s how I feel with Pierce.

Paul is by far my favorite player.  I was young when I saw Bird, McHale and Parrish play and they were already past their primes.  Pierce and Antoine Walker were my guy’s that I watched play every day.  I don’t know a kid on the court that didn’t do the ‘Toine shimmy after a bucket.  I was down with Pierce’s grittiness and the fact that he wasn’t going to blow you away with speed but he always got to where he wanted to go.

I feel like if Paul were to write a book I would be one of the first to pre order it.  After he’s done playing.

We have an unprecedented amount of access to celebrities and sports stars with information on what kind of toothpaste they use and the preferred toilet paper choice.  I’m not a huge Twitter fan but I can see the usefulness of it.  A ton of players use it, some during games (looking at you, Charlie Villanueva) and some just to give little snippet s with their 140 characters.  I’m fine with that. Official bio pages are also straight because there is usually someone commissioned to run them.

Blogging? Ok, fine.  Blogging during the season?  Sorry, I’d like you to pay attention to your game rather than divulging what color makes you happy today.  I’m not trying to be glib here, I just think there are other things players need to concentrate on during the season.  I don’t begrudge Paul for his ideas on raising the rim three inches, shortening the season to sixty games or how he made Boston his city.  I would like to hear all that and more but you know what I’d really like? Twenty point games instead of nine.  Being able to control the tempo at home and hold on to a lead.

I know I can’t be the arbiter of who blogs and when, that would be retarded.  There is no way that I could ever understand the sort of compartmentalization an athlete needs to have in order to live life off outside of the game.  Maybe Pierce doesn’t care that his ideas as well as his recent on court efforts have come under scrutiny.  The way I think is that when you are struggling  you should take care of getting right first and then you can do what you want.

For now, Pierce’s blog on boston.com is like the mayo on my spicy chicken.  I didn’t want it but I’m still going to eat it, and that’s the Truth.
