Viking Fans Is The Recent Spat Between Childress and Favre a Concern?
For years Vikings head coach Brad Childress has been lauded for his cerebral approach to the game. After aggressively courting future Hall of Famer and mercenary Brett Favre during the whole off season, Childress showed he was not above kissing up for the good of his team. Throughout the first twelve weeks of the season, everything was on auto pilot for the Vikings. In fact, despite their one road loss at Pittsburgh, many including myself thought the Vikings were not only the most complete team but also the best team in the NFL. Fast forward a few weeks and now you have a team that has lost two of their last three games and more importantly, you have a potential quarterback-head coach disaster brewing. When I first saw the animated discussion between the coach and Favre I thought to myself that this was just another example of a hypercompetitive star who did not want to leave a game that he believed the Vikings could win. End of story right? After allowing the pundits time to create as much drama as possible, I decided to take a deeper look into this story. According to several sources, after Favre publicly voiced his displeasure over being pulled from the game during his post game comments, Childress launched into a closed door tirade with his star quarterback. Note to coach Childress- Favre has a different set of rules and you were well aware of this when you went out and gave him the keys to the kingdome. This was your decision and it initially divided the locker room as a result of Favre "sauntering into a press conference after missing all of training camp" so now you must deal with it. If this situation is not resolved, the Vikings could be looking at a second round playoff loss in which Favre throws multiple picks and the team has emotionally check out. While this is not what the Vikings needed at this point in the season, this could prove to be a wake up call for the team. Who knows maybe sometime in February Vikings players and fans will look back at this as just a minor blip.
