Zorn's Monday Presser

Mark ButerbaughDec 14, 2009

Jim Zorn’s Monday press conference ranged over the quarterback, the rookie pass-rusher, the running backs and the punt return problems.

On the subject of injuries, Zorn said FB Mike Sellers will be jogging on the treadmills and will try to practice later this week. Right now, both Sellers and CB DeAngelo Hall are “questionable” for Sunday’s game against the Giants. DT Albert Haynesworth will try to practice Wednesday and will be evaluated later in the week. RT Stephon Heyer will be limited in practice this week, but is extremely likely to play on Sunday.

Happily, Zorn said the Redskins suffered no new major injuries against the Raiders. DT Cornelius Griffin suffered a strained pectoral muscle on Sunday, but should be fine. “We miss the guys that aren’t here now. We’ve got ten guys on injured reserve; we’d love to have those guys on this club.”

On the subject of offensive improvement, Zorn praised improved “execution” by the players and said the “game plan” hasn’t changed much over the weeks.

[To me, this looks like another attempt by Zorn to deny credit for any improvements to Sherman Lewis and to claw back as much credit for himself as possible.]

Zorn lavished praise on QB Jason Campbell, calling him “tough-minded” and specifically pointing out the 30-yard completion to Santana Moss as a call Campbell called himself. He said Campbell is playing “with a high level of awareness” and is “continuing to improve.” Zorn said he is “very encouraged” by the way Campbell has stepped up his game and mentioned his benching against the Kansas City Chiefs as “a turning point.” He says the benching was a “defining moment” for Campbell because he was determined to improve his play and never be benched again.
