Free Agency Preveiw 2010: Quarterbacks
Bryan BrackneyDec 12, 2009
With the end of the 2009 season, teams are starting to look into the future and beyond. Here is an in-depth look at quarterbacks who are expected to be free agents in 2010. Check Reservation For Six for more free agency previews in the next couple of days.
- Jason Campbell - Washington Redskins - (RFA)* - His future in Washington very much depends on whether Jim Zorn will be the head coach in Washington next year. Could start for some teams. Is defiantly at a crossroads in Washington. Has played pretty well considering how bad the Redskins line is.
- Chad Pennington - Miami Dolphins - (UFA) - Will probably not be re-signed after the Dolphins have unloaded Chad Henne. A stop-gap solution, who lacks an NFL arm. The Dolphins will be just fine with Chad Henne, Pat White, and Tyler Thigpen in 2010. Henne has the ability to make all of the throws, and he gets the balls to receivers fast, two things Pennington can't.
- Bruce Gradkowski - Oaklkand Raiders - (RFA)* - Will probably be re-signed, but the question is as a backup or as a starter. Has much value and intrigue, but the Raiders still might opt to try to move forward with JaMarcus Russell. Russell does not seem willing to take a paycut, so it will be interesting to see how the whole Raiders-saga will turn out
- Kyle Ortan - Denver Broncos - (RFA)* - Will get re-signed, but he could be franchised or signed to a average to high tender.
- Senaca Wallace - Seattle Seahawks - (UFA) - The Seahawks really like Wallace, but Walace could have a chance to compete for a job elsewhere.
- Kyle Boller - St. Louis Rams - (UFA) - A toss-up on whether he returns. A number two guy for sure. The Rams have been looking at third-string quarterback Keith Null as of late, and I would not be surprised if Boller was forced to pack his bags after the season.
- Brodie Croyle - Kansas City Chiefs - (RFA)* - Croyle saw some game action last week in for Matt Cassel
- David Carr - New York Giants - (UFA) - The Giants really like Carr, who is one of the best back-up quarterbacks in the NFL, but they drafted Rhett Bomar for a reason.
- Tarvaris Jackson - Minnesotta Vikings - (RFA)* - Some still consider Jackson the future starting quarterback for the Vikings, others do not.
- Troy Smith - Baltimore Ravens - (RFA) - I would imagine that he would be back, but other teams might bite with a low tender.
- Charlie Batch - Pittsburgh Steelers - (UFA) - The Steelers might opt to let Batch go and use Dennis Dixon as their No. 2 quarterback.
- Mark Brunell - New Orleans Saints - (UFA) - The Saints could sign him to a short term deal, or of course he could retire. The Saints could very well add Chase Daniel from their practice squad to replace Brunell.
- Daunte Culpepper - Detroit Lions - (UFA) - Wants to be a starter, but will not find that option in Detroit. Drew Stanton seems to be a perfect (less expensive) fit as the Lions No. 2 quarterback.
- Jeff Garcia - Free Agent - (UFA) - He won't sign in the free agency period. Teams would consider him late in training camp if their quarterback got injured.
- Chris Redman - Atlanta Falcons - (UFA) - The Falcons will want to re-sign Redman to a short-term deal. The Falcons will not break the bank for Redman, with a young John Parker Wilson under contract through 2010.
- Kellen Clemens - New York Jets - (RFA)* - The Jets will not put a higher tender for a back-up, there is a chance some team might snatch him up. Will be the Jets starting quarterback against the Buccaneers, so he will have a chance to get more money in free agency. The New York Post think Clemens must play well and win if he wants to play with the Jets in 2010.
- Rex Grossman - Houston Texans - (UFA) - The Texans won't get crazy to re-sign Grossman, with Dan Orlovsky already under Matt Schaub.
- A.J. Feeley - Carolina Panthers - (UFA) - Doubtful that he gets re-signed by the Panthers.
- Matt Moore - Carolina Panthers - (RFA) Has a chance to show his value with Delhomme out.
- John Beck - Baltimore Ravens - (RFA) The Ravens will not put a very high tender in for Beck, if they put one in at all.
- Charlie Frye - Oakland Raiders - (RFA)* - The Raiders won't spend much money on Frye, who is only their third quarterback.
- Charlie Whitehurst - San Diego Chargers - (RFA)* - The Chargers will not put a high tender in for Whitehurst because they have a steady Billy Volek ahead of him.
- Josh McCown - Jacksonville Jaguars - (UFA) - The Jaguars will not break their bank for a back-up.
- Brian St. Pierre - Arizona Cardinals - (UFA) - Would be a number two quarterback if he left Arizona. I don't see how he could be a Cardinal in 2010. The Cardinals would have to lose either Kurt Warner or Matt Leinart for St. Pierre to stay.
