Frank Mir's Weight: Cause More Problems Than Solutions?
It is known that former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Frank Mir has put on between 20 to 30 pounds of muscle in his upcoming bout with the dangerous French kick boxer, Chieck Kongo.
Mir has made it abundantly clear that his long term goal is to have the deciding rubber match with current UFC Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar, and it is this desire within Mir which has caused the sudden need to be a bigger heavyweight.
There is a strong possibility that making a change in size can alter ones performance during fights weather they be positive or negative, although in some cases for some fighters it has little to no effects on how well they perform.
Mir is expected to be fighting in a few days time at around 260/265 pounds, possibly more on the night of the fight. Yet there is a strong sense that Mir's weight change may do more harm than good.
Mir has had a habit of fighting at 240 to maximum of 255 pounds and for a sudden change in the game will raise many questions on Mir's speed and endurance. Sure Mir claims to be faster, fitter and stronger, but this still remains to be seen.
Frank has never been known for his cardio and has showed signs of severe fatigue during fights in the past nor has his striking ability been jaw-dropping. Some may argue that Mir's striking looked effective at UFC 92 against Nogueria, but in my view they were sluggish. Nog was indeed standing right in front Mir, inviting a clean punch to the face.
Getting by Kongo's 82' inch reach won’t be an easy task. Mir needs to do this in order get close enough to obtain a takedown as he won’t want to be standing for too long. A dangerous tactic for Mir as he doesn’t exactly have the best chin in the division and tends to be overwhelmed once rocked. Kongo, without a doubt has the ability to keep Mir at bay with the jab before landing one heavy blow and force the stoppage.
This couldn't have been a worse time for Mir to try out this new tactic in my opinion. Viewers will be extremely lucky to see this fight see past the first round. Kongo has a very dangerous striking game his punches are quick, not to mention incredibly accurate and will definitely play a factor in the fight.
We may be in for a shock, and Mir shows us all his best performance yet but I personally wouldn't put my money on it!
What are your thoughts on the situation?
