Chris Johnson's Run For the Record!

Brandon GriffinDec 8, 2009

Chris Johnson is a name you have probably heard of once or twice. It was just last year the back from Orlando was drafted in the first round(24th overall) out of ECU. The Pirate went to the Titans and has changed the way their offense works.

He is the fastest back to play the game. He also has accrued 1,509 yards rushing over his first 12 games this year. He has tied the franchise record with seven straight 100 yard games, and has a great chance to break that record this week against the Rams 28th ranked rush defense.

With his 1,509 yards so far this season there are a lot of different people saying he could not only become the 6th player all-time to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, but even break the NFL record of 2,105 yards. That is a 25 year old record set in 1984 by Eric Dickerson. Dickerson had only managed to get 1,452 yards through his first 12 games.

After the first 3/4 of the season has been completed all CJ has to do is play the game, and not worry about the record. He is ahead of Dickerson to this point, and only needs 134 yards against a defense allowing 140+ YPG rushing to stay ahead of his marks. He has 4 mediocre rush defense to play the rest of the season. The Titans finish their season with four very winnable games. They play the currently ranked 28th, 14th, 21st, and 13th ranked rush defenses. It is a great setup to make a "run for the record."

In the last 4 games CJ needs to average 149.25 yards per game to reach 2,106 yards. That is less that his 152 yard average in the last 6 games, which is when quarterback Vince Young took the helm again. Everyone needs to tune in Sunday at 1:00 Eastern to watch the Titans and Chris Johnson take on the St. Louis Rams.
