Should Orlando Stick With Jason Williams Or Jameer Nelson?
The Orlando Magic have won five straight games with Jason Williams at the point. This must give Stan Van Gundy a sense of déjà vu.
Last year the magic rolled into the finals with Rafer Alston at the point and Anthony Johnson as back up while Jameer Nelson recovered from injury. They made it to the NBA finals with this line up.
Many questioned Van Gundy when he reinserted a healthy Nelson back into the starting line for the finals. At face value it made sense. He is an All-Star point guard. He averaged 27 points in two regular season wins against finals opponent, L .A Lakers.
However sceptics believe that when your team is on a roll you should not tinker with the line up.
That team lost to the champions, Lakers, four games to one.
Roll on 2009-10 season. The Magic have just won 5 straight games without their young All Star Guard. They have won nine of their last ten games with wins over the Boston Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks. Two of the top teams in the East.
Jason Williams has been more stellar than spectacular but the wins are mounting up. Williams, who spent last season retired, is averaging 9.4 points and 6.8 assists in the last nine games which he has started in place of Nelson.
Of the nine games Nelson has missed they have won eight. Williams scored 25 points and dished out eight assists in the loss to Miami Heat by a point.
Rashard Lewis was suspended the first ten games by the league and is now back with the team.
However this team is playing well together.
Otis Smith, General Manager of the Magic expects Nelson to start practicing in two to three weeks time.
A lot can happen in two weeks' time but for now the team belongs to Williams and they are doing great. If he can consistently hit the open shot and take care of the ball his team mates will do the majority of the work.
Vince Carter had the best game of the season according to Stan Van Gundy, last Saturday night with 27 points. This was a win over the Golden State Warriors.
Rashard lewis has shaken off a bad shooting start and has been averaging 18 points the last five games. Dwight Howard has sealed his All-Star position averaging 18 points and12 rebounds a game.
The magic are currently at the top of the Eastern Conference with a 16-4 record.
