BCS Bowl Analysis: What Else Did You Expect?

Jeff PencekDec 6, 2009

The BCS has done its job once again in 2009. It has pitted the two best teams in the country together in the national championship game.

(Disclaimer: The two best teams must be in the Big 12 or SEC, or be named Ohio State, or be so much better than any other team listed above like USC and Miami were in previous years.)

Alabama was playing for a national title spot and dominated against Florida and earned it. Alabama played a tough neutral-site game against Virginia Tech to start the season, and looked like a top-two team in the country.

Ignore the fact that Florida was a bit of a fraud team. Seriously, Florida isn't a university that seeks to challenge themselves in football. They understand their protected status under BCS rules. Any school that hasn't played an out-of-state non-conference regular season game since 1991 is a school seeking as many soft victories as possible.

Alabama played "Who Cares About U" also, but that game in Georgia in the beginning of the season prepared the team for the SEC championship. The Tide stepped up and deserved their spot in Pasadena.

Texas on the other hand, needed a review and an absolutely pathetic opposing offense to win on a last-second field goal. Texas played good defense, and the kicker made a great kick.

There is nothing else positive to say about them after that performance against Nebraska. Every team has a close shave, and Texas did win, just like Cincinnati survived a scare. Both teams deserve an excellent payday as a BCS bowl, just not as the national championship game.

I thought the purpose of the BCS was to put the best two teams together. I know, I'm laughing also, and since TCU is not part of the SEC or Big 12, and has nothing in common with Ohio State, they can't possibly be one of the best two teams in the country.

For Texas fans that rightfully believe the Longhorns got screwed out of the title game last year, I ask you this question: Had TCU been Nebraska yesterday, how many points would Texas have lost by? TCU's defense is just as good, if not better, than Nebraska's. Nebraska's offense ranks 102nd in the nation in offensive yards per game. TCU is fourth.

Texas has their marquee win and in a showcase game, they stunk up the joint. Colt McCoy was a slip or a deflection away from making one of the biggest mess-ups in college football history.

Even with two undefeated teams in the title game, the college football machine will have a tough time building a great deal of buzz for this game, especially when fans aren't sure Texas is deserving.

Also in the BCS's infinite wisdom, this matchup opens up congressional scrutiny to people looking for any legislation that can rally people and distract them from real issues.

Of course when these schools take government money, they make themselves a public interest. It doesn't take a political genius to figure out the system is rigged in favor of two conferences and a few other teams, and teams like TCU and Boise State will never have a chance. They may be thrown a bone, but even then the bowl committees and BCS screw it up.

The BCS bowls look horrendous.

Ohio State will be ready to be served up for the annual Ohio State/Big 10 embarrassment. I don't mind Iowa and I like Georgia Tech, but picking a team because they travel well is not really striving to create the best game. TCU and Boise State are in the Fiesta Bowl, that will surrender ratings for a night to isolate the outsiders.

The BCS is the fancy restaurant that put the poorly dressed couple next to the dumpster so their rich guests couldn't possibly see such filth, even if the filth has more money or are extremely talented.

Here are two scenarios for how the bowls should be, one following tradition and BCS rules, and the other trying to actually create the best games. If there won't be a playoff, the least that could happen is interesting football.

Scenario No. 1

BCS Title: Texas vs. Alabama

Rose: Ohio State vs. Oregon

Fiesta: Virginia Tech vs. Boise State (I picked VA Tech because ACC teams actually win bowl games.)

Sugar: Florida vs. TCU

Orange: Georgia Tech vs. Cincinnati

Scenario No. 2

BCS Title: Alabama vs. TCU

Rose: Oregon vs. Cincinnati

Sugar: Florida vs. Ohio State

Fiesta: Texas vs. Boise State

Orange: Georgia Tech vs. Iowa or LSU

You can create your own. Almost anything you create will be better than what will happen in January.
