C.J. Spiller: The Best Player in the Country
(Give that young man a Heisman Trophy.)
Well, I'm convinced. You should be too.
C.J. Spiller is the best player in the country.
Now, the good people who count the Heisman votes do not care what I think, hence I do not have a vote. But were I had one, it would go to Spiller.
Let us forget, for a moment, that he used the biggest stage available to him to play the most impressive game of his life, Spiller is everything you would want in a Heisman Trophy winner.
He's multi-talented, equally scary on offense and special teams. He can carry the load, not that he needed to tonight. He's more exciting than any player since Reggie Bush. He's a game changer all by himself. Look at what his teammates did in the ACC title game against Georgia Tech, and you'll see that Spiller was pretty much carrying Clemson by himself.
Most of all, though, Spiller is what Dabo Swinney called a "program changer." He has completely renovated the entity that is Clemson football. Because of C.J. Spiller, being a Tiger suddenly looks like a privilege, not a second choice.
Oh, and now we can remember that, on nights where Tebow and McCoy fell flat and Ingram was effective but not electric, Spiller almost won a title by himself.
In truth, it's sad to think that the two most deserving candidates, Spiller and Stanford back Toby Gerhart, are likely to do the worst in the overall voting.
Even worse, there's a possibility Clemson could fall as far as the Music City Bowl, (where Florida State should be) though honestly, the Tigers will likely be in Atlanta on New Year's Eve for the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.
The Heisman Trophy is handed out to the best player in college football each year. This year, it probably won't be, and that's a shame, because C.J. Spiller deserves at least that much.
