Titans-Texans: Tennessee Wins Even Without Vince Young

Justin YoungOct 21, 2007

IconWith Vince Young out due to a strained quad, backup Kerry Collins took over starting quarterback duties for the Tennessee Titans this weekend—a role in which he'd been 0-5 before Sunday's game at Houston.

However, thanks to the Rob Bironas Show, the Titans (4-2) nipped the Texans (3-3) 38-36—with Bironas kicking a 29-yard field goal as time expired.

The game-winner was Bironas' eighth of the day, setting a new NFL record.

The Titans put on a defensive clinic for most of the game. The Texans only managed one touchdown in the first three quarters, which came when Houston's DeMeco Ryans levelled Collins, knocking the ball loose.

Ryans returned it 26 yards for his first NFL touchdown.

Tennessee would recover two fumbles and add pressure to backup Sage Rosenfels as former Colt Nick Harper picked him off twice and Keith Bulluck would make another interception.

As the game neared the end of the third quarter, it was said by CBS commentators that 30,000-35,000 Houston fans left (For you Baylor fans, think about the 2006 Homecoming game vs. Kansas).

But as the game's conclusion neared, Houston would score 29 points to Tennessee's 3, giving the Texans a 36-35 lead with 57 seconds remaining.

Then, on 3rd and 10 at their own 37, Collins would complete a 46-yard pass to Roydell Williams, setting Tennessee up for Bironas' game-winner.

I believe this game proved to all of the doubters that Tennessee can win without Young leading the team.

Although Young's speed and ability to scramble gives the offensive an edge, Collins showed to be an efficient passer as well as consistent.

Next week, the Titans welcome the Raiders to Nashville while the Texans travel to San Diego to take on LT and the Chargers.
