NHL Short Notes
1. HURRICANES LOSE ANOTHER BIG GUN
The nightmare season for the Carolina Hurricanes got that much worse on Monday when they lost their number one defenceman in Joe Corvo with a bad laceration to his right leg. This 32 year-old who has scored four goals and 12 points on the season suffered the mishap against the Washington Capitals when he was accidentally cut by an opposition’s skate. Carolina who recently had star forward Eric Staal come off the disabled list will be without Corvo for an estimated 12 weeks of action. This could be the crushing blow for any hopes of getting back into the playoff race as the Hurricanes are 13 points out of a playoff spot and are dead last with only 15 points.
2. SAVARD INKS LONG TERM WITH THE BRUINS
Boston Bruins fans have reason to be ecstatic about their team’s future as it was officially announced on Tuesday that veteran playmaker Marc Savard has agreed on a long term extension. Arguably the most underrated player in the NHL this 32 year-old is coming off an 88 point season and an impressive +25 rating. It’s been an injury riddled season for the former 1995 New York Rangers draft pick who this year has only played 11 games and scored 10 points. Savard who has 673 career points and averages approximately 67 assists over the last four seasons signed for two more years with an annual cap hit up 4.2 million a season.
