Who Will We See in The Main Event at UFC 110
How do you secure a positive reaction when breaking into a market for the first time?
You set up a sure to be exciting fight against Wanderlei Silva and Michael Bisping when you debut in Australia.
As first reported on Monday by Fighters Only, the UFC, although the company has yet to confirm, has decided to nix the Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama fight and pit Bisping against the “Axe Murderer” in the main event of UFC 110.
Until an official announcement, all the masses can do is speculate whether this quick shuffle is legitimate. However, instances like these have happened before and Internet reports do come true. Dana White did claim that Bisping had a fight already lined up, but he wouldn’t announce who. This also isn’t the first time Bisping has been linked to a fight against Silva.
What about “Sexyama?”
A fight between Silva and Akiyama is no doubt going to produce fireworks as well. Based on averages, he’s a finisher. His last decision win against Alan Belcher wasn’t exactly a technical bore either. That being said, 15 minutes of exchanges between Silva and Akiyama could make for a heck of a show.
So in retrospect, whatever fight happens should give the new Aussie crowd something to look forward to in the future.
What this does rankings-wise, and this is my opinion, is puts either Bisping or Akiyama in the Top-10 with a win and pushes Silva upward towards that list should he pull one out, after all it would be his first win in the middleweight division in some time.
Guessing what the UFC will do after the outcome of 110 is anyone’s guess. Chael Sonnen is being matched up against Nate Marquardt for a title shot, so practically anything from title shot to the winner’s next match being a title eliminator is possible. Stranger things have happened, like Dan Hardy taking on Mike Swick for a title shot.
Another interesting outcome could be the winner taking on either Bisping or Akiyama, depending on which one actually enters the Octagon at UFC 110.
All speculation aside, one thing that the main event at UFC 110 in Sydney, Australia can almost all but guarantee is that it will be a war. If I was a betting man, and I am, I wouldn’t bet on seeing grappling showcases.
